“OFF SEASON” SUGGESTIONS FOR ANGLERS

'T'HE summer has gone. Fading leaf and falling tree, as the poet said. And the active participants in summer sports are lost souls in the winter void. Some of the more athletic cricketers play football, while others wrestle with their last season’s averages. Lawn tennis players restring their rackets or knit pullovers for next season. Bowlers have their billiard tables, and re-play last season’s heads with snooker balls. But what of the poor angler? His is a tedious winter. During the winter months the habitual angler is a sorry creature. There is nothing for him to do. He sits and contemplates his past triumphs and thinks out new campaigns for the coming season. Here arc a few ideas for the long dark evenings, by means, of which the fisherman may beguile a weary hour, and which should result in his welcoming the new season fresher and more ready to do victorious battle with ' ' the monsters of the streams. Knitting is an excellent pastime. Let the angles decide to make a pair of socks to wear inside hb waders. The very planning of the project will fill in an evening or two The size, for instance. That means getting out the waders and measuring the inside of the foot. Very awkward too. with a foot rule that bends in only three places. This question settled, there is the quantity of material to be obtained and the modus operand! to be decided. Does one erect scaffolding to make socks, or how is it donfe. anyway? Why, the next season is here before the knitter knows where he is.
