BALCLUTHA Magistrate’s Court.—The monthly sitting was held yesterday, before Mr H. J. Dixon, S.M. William Waldron, of Glenomaru, who was charged with operating a goods service between Glenomaru and Dunedin without a traffic licence, pleaded not guilty. He was under the impression he said that he did not need a licence, as be was driving his own and carrying slabs of wood to Dunedin for cutting into firewood. After hearing the evidence of the borough traffic inspector (Mr W. Gray), the magistrate said a licence was required for carrying goods a distance of mors than 30 miles alongside a railway. The defendant was convicted and fined 40s, with costs (10s). —David Marshall, Paretai, was charged with disobedience of a maintenance order for the support of his wife, Lilo Ellen Marshall, of Dunedin, the order being for the payment of 17s 6d a week. The arrears amounted to £l3 11s. The defendant was convicted and sentenced to 10 days in Dunedin prison, the- warrant to be suspended if the defendant paid the amount owing under the order of the court. OWAKA Wintry Weather.—A fall of snos» amounting to about two inches was experienced on Monday morning, and snow fell again during the night. The surrounding hills were fairly heavily coated, and in some places at the head of the Owaka Valley there was a depth of seven inches. Personal.—Miss B. Vial is spending, -m holiday at Queenstown. - ■ Home Guard.—The Home Guard is continuing its parades and exercises. . It meets every Saturday afternoon or evening. WAIPAHI Community Sing.—A community sing, which was held last Friday' evening, was conducted by Messrs A. Dreaver and G, Laing. Items were contributed by Messrs L. D. West, Dreaver. I. Allan (solos), I. Dallas (xylophone solos), and Miss E. Aitcheson (piano solo). A large quantity of goods, which have beeen given to the community sing, were disposed.of. and the collection, which was for patriotic purposes. totalled £42.
