TRANSFERS OF SMALL GRAZING RUNS

TO THE EDITOR

Sirln April last • a transfer of a large property by the Land Board was reported in the Daily Times. Was there not. at the same meeting, tut not reported, a transfer of a small grazing run in the Middlemarch district, the new lessee being granted exemption from living on his property during the duration of the war, while at the same time he is managing a property at a salary that will pay for carrying on his small grazing run? It is rumoured that this property, comprising two runs, has been, or is going to be. taken over by the Government. Why should the lessee in this case be granted exemption while other tenants have to reside on their properties? Is it not a fact that a Crown tenant within a few miles of this transfer had to return and live on his holding at the request of the board a short time ago? Perhaps the Man Power Committee may upset these arrangements if the lessee happens to be called up for military service There was an election for a member of the Land Board a few weeks ago. Does the successful candidate think, as a representative of the Crown tenants, that this should be permitted?—l am, etc.. Crown Tenant. tThe Commissioner of Crown Lands states that the Land Act gives the board some discretionary powers in the matter of residence in certain cases, each case being considered on its merits.—Ed.. 0.D.T.l
