THE RED SEA
DANGEROUS FOR SHIPPING GERMAN OPERATIONS (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) BERLIN, May 14. It is officially stated that owing to developments in the war in the eastern Mediterranean, the Red Sea has become an area of operations for German forces and any shipping sailing in this territory risks destruction by mines and other means of war. REACTION IN AMERICA PROCLAMATION UNALTERED (Rec. 1 a.m.) WASHINGTON. May 14. Germany's designation of the Red Sea as a war zone is unlikely to alter Mr Roosevelt’s recent proclamation that the area is safe for American shipping. While Mr Roosevelt is required to proclaim combat zones around belligerent countries, he is only compelled to establish them elsewhere when actual danger exists. This danger is unexpected until and if Germany is able to achieve military control of the Red Sea.
