RACING AND TROTTING

RACING NEWS By Sentinel FIXTURES May 15, 17. —South Canterbury J.C. May 17, 19.—Otaki-Maori R.C. May 17, 19.—Waikato R.C. May 31. June 2. 7.—Dunedin J.C Dunedin Winter Meeting.—Nominations for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s winter meeting are due on Monday next. i Eulogist.—The soft going at Ashburton did not suit Eulogist as he requires a firm track to be seen at his 'best. Adina. —The Rosenor gelding Adina has been winning and showing improvement. He wil be up against a different proposition at Timaru. Beau Vlte.—Beau Vite has started 17 times this season, but only twice in the Dominion. He was won 12 races and been second twice, and his gross earnings for the term are £13,680. Jewish Lad.—The distance attached to the Craigmore Hack Steeplechase will suit Jewish Lad. who is brilliant, but not a good stayer. Cymric.—The Roydon gelding Cymric has been shaping well under big weights, and, with a comparatively light burden at Timaru may shape well. Knight Commander. —The Nightmarch gelding Knight Commander shapes best with a strong rider, and not when an apprentice has. the mount. Superex.—The Night Raid gelding Superex had trained off at the finish of the Riverton meeting, and if freshened up should shape well over the Timaru fences. Speedy Sorts.—Two runners with a good turn of speed in Master Hotspur and Gold Flight are engaged in the Seadown Handicap and hold outside chances. They may, however, go too fast to last. Royal Lancer.—The Irish Lancer gelding Royal Lancer will probably start favourite for the Elloughton Handicap. He has won 10 races this season, and has run three seconds and two thirds in 23 starts. From the South.—Royal Lancer. Araboa, Aravane, Noko, Gold Flight, Music Hall, and Austral Flame arrived at Washdyke early in the week to race at the Timaru meeting. • . King’s Toast.—The Hunting Song gelding King’s Toast won the Timaru Cup in good style in the smart time of 2min ssec. He disappointed at Ashburton, but may return to form again on a dry track at Timaru. Smart Hacks. —Some smart hacks are engaged in the Claremont Hack Handicap. One that should shape well is Ann Mie, who won the Electric Stakes with 8.10 in Imin 13 3-ssec. She has 7.9 in the Claremont Hack Handicap. Aravane.—When Royal Lancer won the Fiord Handicap with 9.9 Aravane 7.9 J was unplaced. At Timaru Royal Lancer is dropped 41b and meets Aravane on 6Jlb better terms. Royal Lancer should be able to account for Aravane. Hearth.—When Hearth won the Doncaster Handicap she finished over two lengths in front of Rebel Mate when giving 151 b. In the Seadown Handicap there is 141 b between them and Rebel Mate will again require an allowance to give him a chance. / Claremont Handicap.—The acceptors for the Claremont Handicap total 25, and m the event of the number of starters exceeding 24 (the safety limit) the race will have to be divided. If this is necessary, the totalisator can be opened only once, as the Gaming Act provides that the machine can operate eight times only on any one day. In the event of a division the stake will then be increased to £l5O, winners to receive £6O, seconds £lO and thirds £5. Yearlings.—The last crop of yearlings by Christopher Robin (now in New Zealand) to be reared in Australia, were sold at the Sydney sales, but the highest prices realised for 11 sold were 220 and 120gns. The former New Zealand owner Mr L. R. Nelson. Whangarei. purchased the 120-gumea colt, this being, a first foal out of the Posterity mare ■ Futurity, a daughter ot Motley, by Absurd from. Pennon. Several yearlings by Lackham were also sold, but only one reached three figures. A Walk-over.—There was a walk-over in the Hurdle Race at Randwick recently. Blackle Miller being the only starter and having to go about 100 yards down the track and come back past the judge. Suggestions for the abolition of hurdle racing in Sydney have resulted from the walkover and will be discussed at a conference of racing officials next month. we do not want to eliminate hurdle races. The public seems to like them as spectacles. but a walk-over is a serious matter, and something will have to be done, said Mr George Rowe, secietary of the Australian Jockey Club. Riotous.— Riotous, winner Of the Egmont Steeplechase,, is a veteran of some unusual achievements. He, was , a winner 'over hurdles as a four-year-old at his first attempt in the role, and he was a winner over country the next season at his second attempt as a steeplechaser, the success being gained at Ellershe, too. B - sides this he has won the Wanganui Steeplechase three times (1934, 1935 and 1939), and now he has captured two Egmont Steeplechases with a period.of seven years between the w ins *. - must be something approaching if not a world’s record for Interval of time between victories in the same event Now rising 13 years, Riotous, who has done all his racing in the colours of his trainer, L. Knapp, has been a very former with a record of 23 wins and 31 minor placings in 93 starts for £4731 in stakes. He has been out every season except one since he was three, and last season, in which he started only five times, is his only racing term in which he has not gained, at least one success. TROTTING NOTES By Sentinel FIXTURES May 17, 19.—Nelson T.C. May 24.—Ashburton T.C. May 24 28 —Auckland T.C. Serapcum—At the Forbury Park meeting Serapeum ran well enough to suggest that he will get some of the money at the South Canterbury meeting. Beaconsfleld Trot.—Loyal Friend and Recluse are the favourites for the Beaconsfield Trot at Timaru to-day, and they may find most trouble coming from Shady Glen. Promising Pacers.—Among the most promising pacers seen out at the Forbury Park meeting were Indian Clipper and Shadow Maid, who give every indication of developing into good winners next season. Speedy but Unsteady.—Pilot Peter showed fine bursts of speed in his races at Forbury Park, but did not control it. The first time he travels an unbroken gait he should win from his present mark. Looking Well.—Colonel Grattan looked well when harnessed up at Forbury Park, and the racing he had there should bring him to the peak of his form for his next effort. A Smart Pacer.—Slieve Donard developed a cold during the progress of the Forbury Park meeting, and consequently could not be started on the second day The Erin’s King gelding is a smart pacer when right. Unlucky In the Running.— Glenlee should not be discarded because of his defeats at Forburv Park, as he did not get the best of the running in either of his efforts. A four-year-old by Wrack from Alpha Bingen, he should step his way into tighter classes. riccarton^otes WASHDYKE PROSPECTS (Special) CHRISTCHURCH, May 14. Riccarton stables will have a strong team for the South Canterbury meeting this week. Some of the horses, including Trench Fight, Cymric, Stabilise, and Knight Commander, left this morning, but most of them will go to-morrow. Dividend looks ready for improved form in the hurdle races, though some of the light-weights will keep him busy. Dividend will be hard to beat on Ashburton running. Mungatoon shaped well when schooled, and is a first-class prospect. Waka Is racing badly, but Red Dragon is a useful sort. There are some smart horses In the Claremont Handicap. Eulogist went badly at Ashburton, where Guilder was handy, but both are at their best on a hard track. Lady Derby won impressively at Ashburton, but the big field will not help her, as she is a slow beginner. while no rider has been engaged yet. Treasurer is an improver. Retrogression is not racing well. Roman Son is a good sort, but without a rider yet. Hurry Girl is a definite prospect, with a capable rider, but here again the riding position is uncertain. Ann Mie is well, but must have firm ground. Jolly Time will win good races later on, as she is coming on nicely, but she has not had a race since October. In the Elloughton Handicap, Prudent Prince must run well, as bis form has been very consistent. King's Toast should again be a prospect, though he seems to run all his best races when not hurried early. Knight Commander is not easy to follow, but on his day he is hard to beat. Trench Fight is well,

and should be in the picture, and Wardress can be ticked off for a good effort. The Wrecker is in good order, and his finishing effort over seven furlongs at Ashburton was attractive.

Jewish Lad will be well backed in the Hack Steeplechase, as he looks a better horse than when he raced at Riverton. One other candidate, Golden Sight, has no race form, but he can jump.

Benevolent only needs to repeat Ashburton form to be dangerous In the Duke of Gloucester Cup, as the longer journey will suit him. Good Health and Gay Thread have both shown that they can stay. Stabilise, a winner at Ashburton, should be hard to beat again in the Seadown Handicap, while Sham Boy is another light-weight prospect, Rawhamai will be taking on open company for the first time. Density is very well. She was beaten on this course last month, but she should improve on that form. In the meantime, however, no definite riding arrangements have been announced. C. T. Wilson has been engaged to ride Trench Fight and Retrogression, while C. Fox will be on Cymric. P. Spratt was to have ridden Hurry Girl, but may not be able to get down near to the weight, so he may be on Guilder. H. W. Hibberd had to miss some engagements at South Canterbury, having developed abscesses on his legs. H. Nurse was kicked on the face yesterday by one of his young horses, and had to have a couple of stitches over his right eye. The three-year-old Camphor has been sold by Mr H. D. Greenwood to Messrs Taylor Brothers, three Christchurch residents new to ownership. She may not have much more racing this season, but she should be a good spring prospect as she has shown promise, while the race experience she has had will be valuable later on. THE TIMARU MEETING FIELDS FOR TO-DAY The South Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting will be opened to-day with an excellent card, and with favourable weather it should prove one of the best meetings ever held on the course. A field of 13 is engaged in the Elloughton Handicap, and 15 in the Seadown Handicap.
