MR H. McCRORIE

Mr Hugh McCrorie, formerly seniorsergeant of police at New Plymouth, who died on Wednesday at the age of 72, had served in the force for 37 years. He was born in New South Wales in 1868. coming to New Zealand with his parents when he was about 12 months old. Following his education at Dunedin be was engaged in mining and in 1895 joined the Permanent Artillery. The following year he was drafted into the police force, serving at Mount Cook. Wellington, Christchurch and Papanui, returning to Wellington as a sergeant. In 1915 he was in charge of five men at Westport during a big strike, and it was there that he was promoted to the rank of senior sergeant. He was transferred to New Plymouth in 1920 and retired eight years ago at the age of 65. He is survived by his widow and a daughter.
