SHIPPING LOSSES
HUGE MONTHLY TOTAL NEARLY 500,000 TONS RUGBY, May 9. In view of the various statements made from Berlin and other sources, the Ministry of Information has issued the following figures cf mercantile losses due to enemy action during April:— British: GO ships, of 293.089 tons. Allied: 43 ,hips. of 189,473 tons. Neutral: 3 ships of 5562 tons.
Total: 106 shio.s of 488.124 tons. A message from Washington states that the Maritime Commission has ordered the utmost speed in repairing the seized Italian and German freighters for American and British use to offset losses in the Atlantic. Shipyards are working three shifts each day to repair sabotage
