ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
(WOMAN KILLED BY TRAIN (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Apl. 29. Struck by a train travelling from Wellington to Waterloo about 9.30 a.m. to-day, a young Hutt Valley woman was killed. She was Mrs Jean Gilligan, aged 25, of White’s Line East. The train was not travelling fast as it came round a bend, and when the driver saw Mrs Gilligan standing on the permanent 1 way he sounded the whistle, but she did not turn till the engine was only four or five yards from her. She then half-turned, but was struck by the engine. Her husband is serving with the forces overseas. WOMAN’S DEATH ON ISLAND MUTTON-BIRDING PARTY (P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Apl. 29. At 12.30 this morning the launch Manurewa arrived at Bluff with the body of Mrs George Fife. She had been one of a party of mutton-birders on Big Island, off the east coast of Stewart Island, and collapsed and died yesterday morning. Smoke signals were seen, by a strange coincidence, by the dead woman’s nephew, Mr George Fife, on the Manurewa at 1 o’clock. The boat left Big Island at 4 o’clock for Bluff, which was reached just after midnight. FOUND DEAD IN GARDEN (Special) QUEENSTOWN, Apl. 29. The death occurred this morning of Mr Hugh Anderson, a brother of Dr W. A. Anderson. The body was found in Dr Anderson’s garden with a firearm beside it.
