ST. JOHN AMBULANCE

WOMEN’S TRANSPORT RESERVE Under the authority of the Controller of the Medical and Public Health Committee, Emergency Precautions Organisation, the St. John Ambulance Brigade has been instructed to recruit an Ambulance Transport Reserve, 100 strong, composed of women between 18 and 40 years of age. for service as drivers on temporary ambulances (lorries between 30cvvt and three tons). Recruits must be in good health and must not be suffering from any serious disability, must be in possession of a first aid certificate issued by either the St. John Ambulance Association (home or overseas). St. Andrew's Ambulance Association (Scotland), or the BritishNew Zealand or any Empire or Allied country’s Red Cross Society; and must hold a motor driver’s licence, and preferably with experience in handling heavy cars or trucks. Selected recruits will receive an intensive refresher course in first aid and actual driving experience with the type of lorries which will be used. Members of the Women’s War Service Auxiliary and Townswomen’s Guild are eligible provided they are seconded for this service by their own organisation’s headquarters. While married women are eligible, it should be distinctly understood that they must be free of domestic obligations, at least during times of emergency.
