SHEEP IN POOR QUALITY PRIME BEEF UP IN PRICE The entry of 1535 fat sheep at the Burnside stock sale yesterday was one of the poorest as regards quality seen In the yards for some time. Old ewes were in the majority, with a proportion of prime, suitable for butchers’ requirements. Wethers were in short supply, although the few forward Included some of extra good quality; Prime ewes and wethers met with fair inquiry, selling at late rates. Freezing ewes met with a firmer demand, prices being well up to schedule. Extra prime heavy wethers made to 30s 6d; prime wethers. 24s to 36s 6d; extra prime ewes made to 20s 3d: prime ewes. 15s to 17s; medium ewes. 13s 6d to 14s fid; and light and inferior, from 10s. The entry of 1413 fat lamb;. Included some prime heavy sorts, the rest being medium-weights, with a proportion of light and unfinished. Competition was keen, and prices can be quoted firm at full schedule rates. Extra heavy made to 30s 9d: prime, 25s fid to 27s fid; prime

Xmedlum. 22s fid to 24s fid; and light, from 18s fid. . ... A large yarding of 301 head of fat cattle came forward. The entry contained a smaller proportion of prime heavy bullocks than usual, the bulk being made up of medium-weights, with a tail end of unfinished. Cows and heifers were plentiful, but only' a few of these could be classed as young and prime, the rest beingof Indifferent quality, with many aged cows. Prime-ouallty bullocks met with good competition, prices being 10s firmer. Light and unfinished were not wanted In the fat pens. Heifers and cows met with a poorer demand, values being back, particularly for cows, which sold IDs to 15s lower. Over the last race there was an easing on opening rates. Extra prime heavy bullocks made to £lB 12s fid: rime heavy bullocks. £l6'7s 6d to £l7 7s fid; prime bullocks. £l3 17s fid to £l4 17s fid; medium bullocks. £ll 7s fid to £l2 17s fid; and light and unfinished, from £9 7s fid Extra prime heifers and cows>made to> £ll 12s fid; prime heifers and cows. £8 7s fid to £lO 2s fid; medium heifers and cows. £6 12s fid to £7 12s fid: and light, from £5 2s fid. There was a medium entry of store cattle, including one or two good pens of thrae and four-year-old bullocks. The market showed a sharp decline on recent auctions, and can be quoted at from 10s to 15s lower. Best three aiid four-year-old bullocks made to £lO 7s fid; 2J-year-old. to £6 12s fid; boner cows made usual market values. . . ■ In the dairy cattle section 25 head were penned, and good young cows close to profit made up to £lO Inferior sorts were difficult to quit. A large yarding of 275 fat-, pigs ,came forward, the bigger proportion being baconers Prices for baconers were on a par with late rates, but porkers showed a decline of 5s to 6s per head. Baconers made from, £3 5s to £4 10s and porkers from £2 7s to £3 3s. Of the large yarding of 175 store pigs forward, the biggest proportion was weaners. Prices were much on a oar, with late rates.
