BALCLUTHA Transport Licensing A sitting o f the No. 4 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr S. V. Haines) was held at Balclutha yesterday. Mrs M. E. Corbett applied for the transfer of a taxi-cab licence for Balclutha to W. B. Duff.—Mr Grigor appeared for the applicant, and Mr Walter for Mr Duff. Mr Kelly objected to the transfer on behalf of Red Band Taxis on the ground that the licence had not been operated since July last.—Mr James Wilson (manager of Red Band Taxis) said that his firm had four taxi-cab licences, and at the present time there was not enough business for more than two of them. There was also another taxi-cab licence in the town.—The authority said that, in view of the fact that the licence had not been operated on for over six months, the application was tantamount to asking for a new licence. land it must be refused. Dinneen, who has been accountant in the National Bank at Balclutha for tlje past 11 years, has received notice of transfer on promotion as manager at Ruawai. some 20 e IJLn Ut S of Dargaville. Mr Dinneen J} as a leading member of the Presbyterian Church, and he gave service to various organisations in the town. He expects to leavf with Mrs Dinneen for their new home in a fortnight. Mr Lewis McDonald, manager of the Balclutha branch of the NatfoMl Bank for the past five years, will retire on superannuation on March 31. wd he wi be succeeded by Mr A. N. Watson, at oresent manager of the Tapanul branch. Mr McDonald has been 43 years in the service of the bank, having joined as a boy at Hokitika, and he has been stationed in many centres, including Dunedin, Cromwell, and Port Chalmers, and also in the North Island. Mr and Mrs McDonald intend to take up residence in Gore, where they have many friends. Horticultural Society. At the annual meeting of the Balclutha Horticultural Society it was decided not to hold an autumn show, but to endeavour to hold the soring show later in the year. A credit balance of £9 10s 2d was shown. Medical Board A medical board sat at Balclutha last week, when 75 men eligible for overseas service were examined. Success of High School Pupils The name of Duncan E. Moffat, a pupil of the South Otago High School, was omitted from the recently-published list of candidates eligible for the award of a boarding bursary in the result of the university scholarship examinations. It is also worthy of note that Ainslie Wilson, also a pupil of the same school, received a full pass in the university entrance and medical preliminary examination at the unusually early age of 14 years. This is regarded by the teaching staff of the school as a particularly credit- j able achievement.
