WAIPIATA SANATORIUM

MEETING OF COMMITTEE The monthly meeting oi the Waipiata Sanatorium Committee was held on January 29, when there were present— Messra E. Macdonald, (chairman), W. Bryant, J. Rodman, J. Ritchie, T. Golden, J. H. Smith, A. T. Harris and Dr T. McKtbbln (representing the Department of Health). The medical superintendent (Dr A. Kidd) reported that during. November seven patients were admitted, and during December nine. Ten and twelve respectively were discharged, and 133 and 130 remained at the end of those months, the majority of whom were doing well or improving. He also reported on his visits to the different centres in the committee’s district since last meeting, and recommended as suitable for admission to the sanatorium 12 patients from Southland. 2 from South Canterbury, 2 from Ashburton, and I from South Otago—a total of 17.— The secretary reported that six of these patients had been admitted to the institution. The Director-general of Health (Dr Watt) wrote stating., t that the department had recommended a complete medical examination and an X-ray of the cheat for all pupil nurses on entering the training school.—The medical superintendent reported that the recommendation was being carried out. The district superintendent, live stock division, Department of Agriculture (Dunedin), forwarded the results of the annual tuberculin test recently made on the sanatorium dairy herd, showing that 45 cows had passed, and two cows were to be retested in January or February. Additions to Nurses’ Home The architect (Mr A. C. Ford) placed before the committee sketches or the proposed additions to the nurses' home. —lt was decided that these should be forwarded to the Department of Health for approval.—Mr Ford reported that the contractor had completed the drainage work, and that the painting contractor was making good progress with the external painting of the wooden shelters. The secretary reported that the complete new Diesel electric standby plant had now been delivered, and that he had written to the engineer whose quotation for this installation had been accepted some months ago, with a view to fixing a suitable date to have the existing standby plant dismantled • and the new one Installed. Secretary’s Report The secretary’s report showed that the associated boards had the following patients in the institution on January 29; —Southland 68. South Canterbury 21, Ashburton 13, Waitaki 8, South Otago 12, Vincent 3, Maniototo s—a5 —a total of 130. Since the last meeting of the committee 20 patients from six hospital districts had been discharged. He also submitted a waiting list of 21 patients from three districts, five of whom had been notified that beds were available. The farm manager’s returns of milk and meat supplied to the institution during November and December were as follows, the figures for November being shown in parentheses:—Cattle 87 (85), sheep 1338 (662), and pigs 39 (47). The action of the Farm Committee in purchasing 755 sheep during December was approved. The secretary reported that he had received payment for account sales of

wool £266 7s 3d. and sheepskins £47 13s 4d. Financial Statement The secretary submitted statements of the committee's receipts and payments for November and December, which showed that at December 31 there was a credit balance of £794 19s 2d. Ho also submitted statements of receipts and payments for the nine months ended December 31, as compared with the amounts estimated for the period, showing the actual maintenance re«(pts to be £229 11s less than the estimate, and the actual maintenance payments £967 Is 4d above the estimate. The schedule of accounts and salaries, totalling £2889 14s lid, was passed for payment. The assistant medical officer (Dr W. A. Priest) was granted two months’ leave of absence to take up military duties.
