NURSERYMAN'S LOSS 10,000 TREES DESTROYED (Per United Press AssociAticn) PALMERSTON N., Jan. 14. Ten thousand 17-year-old pinus insignis trees were included in a twomile swathe which a fire cut through the tinder-dry grass, and lows growths in the Oroua Downs district, just .inside the ccastal belt, north of Foxton, yesterday afternoon and last night. The. owner of the trees, Mr Qibbs. a nurseryman, cf Dannevirke. estimates his loss at £SOOO. Practically all the men in the.district were engaged yesterday in fighting the] fire, which is believed to have started at the roadside on the seaward, side.of the main highway, which runs parallel to the coast. Commencing at 10 o'clock in the morning, the flames established a hold in the lupins and fern near the schoolhouse, which was narrowly saved. The fire was considered to be out by midafternoon, but then suddenly blazed up. crossed the highway, and, aided' by howling winds, soon reached a 100ace plantation. A further plantation beyond ws.s saved by the close watch kept by numbers of men.
