Many Aucklanders who during recent years have planted swan plants in their gardens in the hope of providing food for the caterpillar of the Monarch butterfly are wondering what has happened this year to these beautiful and interesting insects. Appearances of the butterfly have been very rare this summer and they have not yet been seen in seme districts. It is suggested that the winter might have proved too inclement for them, or that the caterpillars have been attacked by native birds.
