RICCARTON NOTES

TRENTHAM RIDERS (Special to Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 14. The last of the Riccarton horses who raced at the holiday circuit on the West Coast have returned home, having finished up the trip at Reef ton. The local tracks are quiet again, as more than 20 horses have gone north for the Wellington Racing Club's meeting. Most of them will oe absent till the end ok next week. ■ A large number of trainers left last night for Trentham, taking horses that are to race there at the meeting which opens on Thursday. In addition to those who went from Riccarton, J. Smith went with Settlement, wnom he is training on J. Bryce's track. This horse is unreliable, but is capable of winning good races when in the mood. He will be ridden in the Wellington Cup by S. Green, one of F. A. Roberts's apprentices. This neat little Sydney lad shapes as if he would make a name as a jockey. His other rides on the first day at Trentham will include Salutation and Gold Nugget Schoolgirl has two engagements on the flrst day at Trentham, but she will miss the . Anniversay Handicap (one mile) to take on the Wellington Cup, in which A. Messervy will ride her. She won at a mile and a-quarter at Invercargill this month, and under her light weight she should be in the picture a long way in the Wellington Cup. She may find the journey.a trifle far, but she should pay her way on the trip. With the defection of Beau Vite, A. E. Tsllis was left without a mount in the Wellington Cup, but he has since been engaged to handle Catalogue. The following are among the engagements made by our jockeys for the Wellington meeting:—L. J.. Ellis: Royal Chief, Marshall Hall, Olympus. C. T. Wilson: Wardress, Willow Wood, Winning- Rival. \ Messervy: Schoolgirl, Doria,' Palfrey. A. E. Ellis: Catalogue. P. Spratt: Density. S. Green: Settlement. Gold Nugget, Salutation. A. Johnston: Stylist. D. Corboy: King's Toast.
