Conrick, a well-known owner in New' Zealand prior to his departure for Australia in 1910. Destroyed

L'Aiglon, the winner of the Sydney Cup in 1938, fell when running in the G.agQt Handicap, run at Flemington, and had to be destroyed. Trench Fight 'Trench Fight won so well at Waikouaiti that he should shape well at Trentham. In i Wellington •In . Wellington; Old Bill, Kindergarten, and-Proud Fox are in favoilr for the Wellington Cup, and Arvakur, Sir Crusoe, and Night Eruption for the Telegraph Handicap, Wrong Weights . •At Murray Bridge (South Australia) an apprentice rider won two races when claiming a 71b instead of a 51b allowance. The-trainer was fined £-10. Palencla , " ■'•' „.; •The Paladin gelding Palencla recently got amongst'the winners at Meritbne. He carried 8.5 and beat 10 others over a mile in lmin 402 sec. • Palencia, started third favourite. '. Possible Improvers .Salutation and Palfrey have evidently been pleasing their trainers, and if both have trained on since racing at the New Zealand Cup meeting should shape well at Trentham. ~ Leighnor Although he failed at. Oamaru, Leighnor figures amongst the acceptances for Wellington, and will accompany Twenty Grand to the meeting. Arvakur One of those most in favour for the Telegraph Handicap is the. Beau Pere horse Arvakur. He ran second to Bronwen 8.5 in the Electric Handicap with 8.4, and third with 8.9 to Pirate King 8.8 and Mittie 8.0 in the Newmarket Handicap. '■';:■' >:' Black Thread/, \ One of the most impressive wins scored at the Grand National meeting was that put' up. by Black , Thread when ,he won the Selwyn Handicap under 9.13. He is one of the fancied lot in the Telegraph Handicap. Duvach The Foxbridge filly Duvach, who has won four times this season, is considered to have, an outside show in the Telegraph Handicap. Hearth > Hearth has two engagements on the first day at Trentham, and she seems to be most in favour for the Telegraph Handicap. Her chance would be improved if the field got away to a prompt stars.| Back/.to the Saddle ~;,•■" .Once a bookmaker always a bookmaker is the general run of things in connection with racing. A one-time jockey named W. Brady turned bookmaker at the. Melbourne meetings, but gave it best arid has returned to the saddle,, Appar-, efttly'."'some bookmakers reallv • lose money/ ;■•'?" ': *. Five on End R. J. Chandler, a Hobart ownertrainer, recently gained his fifth successive win in the Longford Cup. when his aged Chivalrous mare Old Days won comfortably. Old Days also won the race, in 1939 and 1940. Fern Gully was successful for Chandler m 1937 and 1938. A Retort: • . .-■ ■■'■: A story is told of a Sydney newspaperman' who has decided that never again will he play jokes on his barber. For a Christmas present he sent a butcher s apron to the barber, with the comment: "If you shave like a butcher, why not look the part?" An hour later the newspaperman received a Christmas present in return from the barber. It was a pound of tripe, and there was no comment, but none was necessary. Chary The Inflation colt Chary recently put up a good gallop at Awapuni, where he. ran five furlongs in lmin 3 3-ssec on the plough track. Chary failed in two starts this season, but last year won three times, was twice second and once third in seven starts. His wins Included the C.J.C. Champagne Stakes, when he carried 8.10 home in lmin 11 3-ssec. He is in at the minimum in the Telegraph Handicap. Gladynev When racing in New Zealand last season Gladynev won four times, was once second, and twice third in eight starts. His best effort was a third in the Wellington Cup with 7.11 to Old Bill 8.0, and Beau Vite 8.7. He was leniently treated in the Caulfield Cup, and probably would have won with a stronger rider up. This year he meets Old Bill on 151 b better terms for a two-length beating. Old Bill goes up 191 b. and at the scale of weights Gladynev should beat him. Old Bill 9.0 ran Beau Vite 9.6 to three parts of a length in the Auckland Cup, but the fact remains that Gladynev is well treated in the Wellington Cup. Pleading Schoolgirl is being selected as well treated in the Anniversary Handicap, to be run at Trentham. At the Dunedin summer meeting Schoolgirl 8.8 won over a mile in lmin 42 2-ssec, with apparently a good deal in hand. In the following race Pleading 8.8 also won easily in lmin 42sec. Pleading put up a much better performance on the second day with 9.4, when, after getting away badly, he put in a brilliant run in the straight, and got up to make a dead heat with Craiglea 9.2 in lmin 27sec. If Schoolgirl runs in the Anniversary Handicap she may find that her most formidable opponent will be Pleading, who is training on well and giving promise of developing into a good class of horse. An " Iron Horse " Little Robin is rapidly earning the reputation of being an " iron horse." He has been racing almost continuously since June at meetings large and small in both islands, includihg big distance events in the New Zealand Cup, the Metropolitan Handicap, and the Manawatu Cup. But just to show that he had not had too much Little Robin carried off the two principal races at the recent Wairarapa meeting at Tauherenikau. In his last 23 starts Little Robin has won seven races, been second twice, third three times, and fourth three times. He is by the Limond horse Resinous, who was bred by the late Mr John Gleeson, at Bell Block.
