RESERVISTS' APPEALS SIX BOARDS APPOINTED MAGISTRATES AS CHAIRMEN <Peb United Press Association) WELLINGTON. Dec. 27. The Minister of National Service, Mr R. Semple, has announced the appointment of six Armed Forces Appeal Boards to deal with appeals from reservists drawn in the ballot for overseas service, and also with appeals based on conscientious objection to service either overseas or in the Territorial armed forces. Mr Sample said the 17 existing Manpower Committees would continue to deal with Territorial service appeals lodged on other than conscientious grounds. As the Armed Forces Appeal Boards were to be judicial bodies, the chairman in each case was a stipendiary magistrate, Mr Semple said. Every endeavour had been made to appoint as members persons well known to the general public,.and whose fairness and integrity could not be questioned The boards are as follows: No. 1 Board (headquarters at Auckland, with jurisdiction over Nos. 1 and 3 military areas, including North Auckland, Auckland City, and. districts as' far south at Pokeno): Messrs C R. Orr Walker, S.M. (chairman). T. P. McCready. and A. M. Samuel (all of Auckland), members; Messrs H. E Hewlett (Whangarei) and J. O. Liddell (Auckland), deputy members. No. 2 Board (headquarters at Hamilton, with jurisdiction over Nos. 2 and 4 military areas, including the Waikato, Thames, Rotorua, Bay of Plenty and Northern King Country districts): Messrs S. L. Paterson, S.M. (chairman), R. Coulter (Te Aroha), and A. E. Manning (Hamilton), members: Messrs D. V. Bryant (Te Rapa) and J. Neate (Ngatea), deputies. No. 3 Board (headquarters at Wanganui, with jurisdiction over Nos. 6 and 8 military areas, including the Manawatu. Rangitikei. Southern King Country, Wanganui and Taranaki districts): Messrs A. Coleman, S.M. (chairman), T. B. Ewens (Waitara) and T. R. Lees (Palmerston North), members; Messrs F. S. Goldingham (Palmerston North) and T. E. Trask (ElthamL. deputies. No. 4 Board (headquarters at .Wellington, with jurisdiction over Nos. 5 and 7. military areas, including the Wellington City. Hutt Valley, Wairarapa, Hawke's Bav and Gisborne districts): Messrs W. S. Stillwell. S.M. (chairman). J. W. G. Brodie and A. Parlane (Wellington). members; Messrs Jack Colman (Lower Hutt) and Percy Covle (Wellington), deputies.' No. 5 Board (headquarters at Christchurch, with jurisdiction over Nos. 9 and 10 areas, including the Marlborough. Nelson. West; Coast and Canterbury districts): Messrs F. F. Reid. S.M. (chairman), A. H. McKanen (Greymouth), and G. M. Hall (Christchurch),: members; Messrs T. M. Charters and J. E. Jones (Christchurch). deputies. No. 6 Board (headquarters at Dunedin. with jurisdiction over Nos. 11 and 12 areas, comprising Otago and. Southland) : Messrs J. R. Bartholomew, SM. (chairman). B. S. Connor (Dunedin) and James Price (Invercargill), members; Messrs H. Hodgson (Dunedin) and J. W. He said he anticipated that the boards would begin their sittings about the end of January. DUNEDIN MEMBERS MESSRS CONNOR AND HODGSON Mr B.S. Connor, who is a member of the No. 6 Aimed Forces Appeal Board, is employed as a salesman by Messrs Hallenstein Bros., and has spent the greater part of his life in the city. He has twice been president of the Labour Representation Committee, and for the past 20 years has been president of the Shop Assistants' Union. He has a son in training at Wigram for the Air Force. . Mr H. Hodgson, a deputy, member of the No. 6 Board, is a returned soldier. He is employed as a motorman by the City Transport Department.
