JOEL’S DEALINGS It has been the luck of few men to win so many important races and be able to spend so much money in search of winners as Mr J, B. Joel, whose death occurred in England recently (says “ Doncaster ”). With large holdings in the diamond and gold mines of South Africa, J. B. Joel was worth millions of pounds, so he could afford to spend fortunes on the turf. He paid thousands for horses that took his fancy, and thousands in establishing his stud. But he was lucky enough to get much of his money back, and probably he had as good a time on the turf as any man ever has. Mr Joel’s wins are too many to enume- ; rate. His most important were the Derby with Sunstar and Humorist, the Oaks with Our Lassie, Glass Doll, Jest and Princess Dorrie; St. Leger with Black Jester and Your Majesty; and the One Thousand Guineas with Jest and Princess Dorrie. Sunstar won for him the Two Thousand Guineas as well as the Derby.

Mr Joel was concerned in many spectacular turf dealings. It is on record that after the death of Mr " Fairie " Cox, and Gay Crusader, who was then established at the stud at a fee of 400 guineas, had been taken over by Mr A. R. Cox, Mr Joel made an offer of £IOO,OOO for the horse. But Mr Cox held out for £120,000, and the deal fell through. Mr Joel paid £40,000 for Prince Palatine, and the day after Solario had won the Coronation Cup Mr Joel instructed an agent to offer £75,000 for the colt. But Solario was not then for sale at any price. Some years later he was put up for auction, and Mr Joel was a member of Lord Glanely's syndicate that paid 47,000 guineas for him.

Although he had won the Derby e,arliei with Sunstar, Mr Joel probably derived most pleasure out of the Derby win of Humorist 10 years later, for he bred Humorist from his great mare Jest. The celebration of Humorist's great win, however, took a tragic turn a few days later. While, doing only cantering work the colt

suffered a bleeding attack, and less than a week after his great triumph he was found dead in his box. . Charles Morton, who trained Humorist and most of Mr Joel's other big winners revealed in his book. " My Sixty Years on the Turf," that Mr Joel gave him £SOOO for winning the Derby with Humorist, and gave Steve Donoghue, who rode the colt, £2OOO. The stake that vear was only' £6450.
