SIR PERCY SARGOOD
APPRECIATION OF SERVICES At a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Y.M.C.A. on Monday night a resolution was passed placing on record deep appreciation of the valuable services rendered to the association bv Sir. Percy Sargood. It was recalled that during his lifetime he. took a deep and personal interest in the work of the Y.M.C.A. When'the present building was erected - lie-took ; a prominent part in the raising' of the necessary funds, and himself contributed generously to the appeal. For many years he was a trustee of the association, and right up till his death took a very active part iri its affairs and continued his generous financial support. The board exi pressed its deep sympathy with Lady Sargood and the members of the farnily. ■ v | Interest in Education 'Hi the meeting of the council of the Otago /University yesterday afternoon the'Chancellor ,(Mr W. J. Morrell) referred to''the death of Sir Percy Sargood" ' He said that Sir Percy Sargood had been one of their most public-spirited citizens for a great number of years, and that he had always shown a warm sympathy for every movement for the good of the community; He had also rendered good service to their university and to'.the museum. He had represented the Government. on , the Management Committee of the,latter body since Us inception" until quite recently, Mr Morrell then moved that the council express its deep regret at the death of Sir Percy Sargood. and its sincere sympathy*with Lady Sargood aridVthe family in their bereavement. The motion was carried in silence /Chamber of Commerce Tribute A record of service to the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce extending over 50 years v s reviewed by the vice-pre-sident, Mr R V C. Burgess, when paying a tribute to Sir Percy Sargood at a meeting of the chamber last night. Sir Percy Sargood joined the chamber in 1891, and was a member until his death Mr Burgess said that Sir Percy had served as a member of the committee of the '.chamber for eight years, from 1893 to 1901, and was vice-president in the. 1895-96 years, as well as in 1904, having been elected to the committee again in 1903. ' ~■■,„ "His services to the comr/.ercial life of the city and of the Dominion as a whole were outstanding," W \ Burgess laid, "and he was held in the highest esteem by a wide circle of friends, gained not only through his business, but through the large number of other interests to which he devoted his time.'
