SIR PERCY SARGOOD

LARGELY ATTENDED FUNERAL SCOUTS PAY TRIBUTE The funeral of Sir Percy Sargood took place yesterday, and was very largely attended. All sections of the community were present to pay their last respects to a citizen who has played a very large part in the business, social, and cultural life of the city of Dunedin for many years. The service at the residence and at the crematorium at the Anderson's Bay Cemetery was conducted by Dean Cruickshank. Sir Percy Sargood was one of the founders of the local Boy Scouts movement, and the president, and his services had earned him the distinction of the '"Silver Wolf," the highest honour which could be accorded him. At "Marinoto" yesterday 250 Scouts lined the drive to. pay their last respects to their leader, and the route from the gates at the cemetery to the crematorium was lined by 143 Boy Scouts and Sea Scouts. The Scouts had been drawn from all of the z 0 units within the city. Included among the other mourners were the Mayor (Mr A. H. Allen), the town clerk (Mr R. A. Johnston), members of the City Council, the Mayor of St. Kilda (Mr J. J. Marlow), representatives of the Y.M.C.A., the Rotary Club, the Chamber of Commerce, Returned Soldiers' Association, Otago Harbour Board, Otago Provincial Patriotic Council, Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen's Association, Public Art Gallery Society, Manufacturers' Association, Importers and Shippers' Association, Stock Exchange, licensed victuallers, retailers, and stock and station agents. The pall-bearers at the residence were Messrs D. A. Ewen (Wellington), S. D. MacPherson (son-in-law), J. Sutherland Ross, C. V. Smith (president of the Rotary Club), G. Z. Lindley (director of Sargood, Son, and Ewen), and District Scout Commissioner C. H. Wing. At the crematorium employees of the firm of Sargood, Son, and Ewen—Messrs L. Colebourne (Auckland), J. M. McArthur (Wellington), C. P. Latimer (manager of the footwear factory), A. Gill (manager of the clothing factory), A. H. McLeod and A. G. Douglas (of the warehouse) —acted as pall-bearers.

A RESPECTED ROTARIAN "He was Rotary personified," said the president, Mr C. V. Smith, at the weekly luncheon of the Dunedin Rotary Club yesterday in paying a tribute to Sir Percy Sargood. Mr Smith spoke of Sir Percy's worth as a Rotarian, and members stood in silence as a mark of respect. WORK FOR MUSEUM Appreciative reference to the generous help given to the museum by Sir Percy Sargood was made by Dr H. D Skinner, director of the Otagp Museum, at a function held in the museum last night and jointly arranged by the Association of Friends of the Museum and the Otago Branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand. " Sir Percy Sargood was one of the best friends this museum ever had," Dr Skinner said. " and he was a splendid committeeman."
