ALEXANDRA Borough Council The monlhlv meeting of the Alexandra Borough Council was held on Monday evening, the Mayor (Mr W. Bringans) presiding. The Mayor extended a welcome to Cr Fox. who was back at the council table after an absence of some months through ill-health. The Works Committee reported that it had Inspected the pipeline, which was in good order, but a bad leak 'near the bridge would have to be attended to. This would entail the water being turned off for a few hours to enable the work to be done. The Works Committee was requested to inspect the Chatto Creek water race, with a view to any necessary cleaning out being undertaken. Accounts totalling £550 lis lid were passed for 'payment. Home Guard •There was a- large attendance at a meeting held on Tuesday evening when Messrs R. Sinel, Dominion organiser, Mr C. J. Hay, liasion officer, and Major McKenzie, area commander, addressed a meeting of the local Home Guard Committee ar)d others interested. ... A steady stream of applications is being received for membership of the Hortie Guard, and a strong force will be assembled locally. Visit of Mr Anderson Tyrer At the conclusion of the local examinations held by the Trinity College of Music, London, and conducted by Mr- Anderson Tyrer, a very interesting. and instructive lecture was delivered by Mr Tyrer to pupils, teachers, and parents, and from which many valuable hints were received. During the evening pianoforte solos were rendered by Miss I. McKeller and her students. Bowling On Wednesday afternoon the first challenge match for the Jolly Cup was played on the Alexandra green, when a Cromwell rink—A. MacDonald, L. Jelley, H. Rusbatch, and J. Smith—were successful in winning the cup from the holders—J. Wilson, W. J. Russell, J. D. Watt, and T. E. Sunderland—after an interesting game by 23 points to 22. Lawn Tennis The following is the draw for the season for the Vincent Tennis Sub-association:— First Round. —November 9: Tarras to Cromwell, Hawea to Clyde, Alexandra to Fruitlands. November 16: Alexandra to Hawea, Clyde to Tarras, Cromwell to Fruitlands. LAWRENCE Rainfall During last month rain fell on 10 days, for a total of .95 inches, the heaviest fall on any one day being .31 inches. For the corresponding month of last year rain fell on 15 days for a total of 2.03 inches. Vital Statistics The registrar (Mr G. Powley) reports that for October the figures were:—Births 1, deaths 1, marriages nil. Farmers' Union At a meeting of the Lawrence branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, Mr J. A. Robertson presided. The secretary of the Otago Provincial Executive forwarded a copy of the minutes of the meeting held in Dunedin on October 15. The Tuapcka County Council wrote requesting the Lawrence and Waitahuna branches to appoint a joint representative to act on the Home Guard Advisory Committee, which is being formed under the emergency reserve corp regulations.— Mr W. F. Labes was appointed. Tn connection with the proposed new price, schedule of freight charges, the following were appointed to investigate the matter:—Messrs R. E. Hall. N. Young and H. Winter. A remit from the Kelso branch regarding assistance for young farmers was supported, and it was suggested that the rate of interest should be 3 per cent, on long-term loans, with a sinking fund. RANFURLY Lawn Tennis The Maniototo Lawn Tennis Association commenced its annual competition on Saturday. The following are' the results of the only two matches for which the score sheets have been handed in:— A Grade: Patearoa defeated Waipiata by 8 sets (96 games) to 5 sets (74 games); three sets we're unfinished. B Grade: Kokonga 10 sets (89 games) defeated Waipiata 2 sets (43 games), with four sets unplayed.
