An essential ingredient in the manufacture of steel, and thus in that of armaments generally is being successfully mined within 32 miles of Auckland. A deposit of manganese ore at Moumoukai, near Clevedon, is being worked, and already substantial quantities have bean sent to the most important steel manufacturer in Australia, while manganese dioxide ore has been shipped to one of the largest makers of dry batteries in the Commonwealth.
