Hare lodged an appeal against his suspension by the Banks Peninsula Judicial Committee. A Mistake The correct distance attached to the Linwood Handicap' is seven furlongs, and not a mile, as appeared in the telegraphed list of acceptances. The Melbourne Cup The winner’s prize in this year’s Melbourne Cup is £5250 in specie and a trophy valued at £2OO. At Timaru The South Canterbury Jockey Club ha* been granted April 26 as the date of its extra day’s racing this season. The Buzzer According to reports from the north, the connections of The Buzzer expect him to run a great race in the New Zealand Cup. Silver Lily Since winning the McLean Stakes, Silver Lily has been training on satisfactorily. She will again have the assistance of L. J, Ellis in the saddle at Riccarton. For Riccarton Wingatui horses in Nightcalm, Boloyna, Withdrawal, Strip, Sir Amyas, Taxpayer, Hanlon; Spearthrust, Gay Lancer, Silver Lily, and Night Pal will travel north tomorrow to fulfil engagements at the New Zealand Cup meeting. Second Innings Second Innings beat several Cup candidates in the Buchanan Memorial, and meets them again on rather different terms at Riccarton. He meets Dictate on 311 b, Swordstick 1611 b, Te Kawlti HJTb, Wardress 1711 b, Passaform 611 b, and Capricious on 311 b worse terms. With the Wind Usually it takes a good horse to break 25sec over two furlongs along the back stretch at Wingatui. They were doing it yesterday morning with the assistance of a strong breeze. Yesterday morning Night Pal and Hanlon ran along the back in 24 l-ssec, and they cannot be regarded as champions. Sprinters Apart from the Stewards’ Handicap, horses able to speed up over six furlongs but not much more are not catered for on the New Zealand Cup programme. The only six-furlong race in which they can run in the Avon Handicap, with a £350 stake. The races to balance the Stewards’ Handicap in value are run over seven furlongs. Old Rowley

The Melbourne Cup winner Old Rowley as a four-year-old won the Y.R.C. nandicap with 7.7 in 2min 58sec, and was second in the Australian Cup with 8.0, won by Marauder 7.4. Old Rowley also won the A.J.C. Plate and Cumberland Plate, and finished twelfth in last year’s Melbourne Cup. He was got by The Buzzard from Syceonelle, by Syce—Ardonelle, by Ardon—Beryl, by The Australian Peer—Beatrice, by Goldsborough. Sir Crnxsoe

Sir Crusoe’s absence from the Stewards’ Handicap came as a surprise after his form at the Wellington spring meeting. He won the Awatea Handicap with 8.6 in Imin 12sec from Mittie 8.o; Vascones 7.2, and Not Out 7.5 in the first four, and the unplaced lot including Density 8.10 and Endorsement 7.6, who are still in the -field. On the third day of the meeting Sir Crusoe 9.2 was second to Not Out 7.4 in the Nainal Handicap, and wfith the rehandicapping was meeting the Riccarton horse on 101 b better .terms in the Stewards’ Handicap.

Good Fields The card for the opening day of the New Zealand Cup meeting is comprised of good fields without being on the unwieldy side through numbers. The field for the Riccarton Stakes is however, somewhat large in numbers. At Addington Though the military authorities still occupy some of the buildings at Addington they will in no way interfere with the New Zealand Metropolitan Club’s meeting next week. The luncheon rooms and the booths will be open to the public as in pre-war days, and all the other appointments will be available A Crack Pacer America has another two-minute three-year-old pacer, Fearless Peter, who in that time registered his thirteenth consecutive win. He accounted for the heats in 2min 4}see. 2mln and 2min Slsec. Fearless Peter is Peter Volo’s tenth two-minute performer, and he was sold by auction as a yearling for 800 dollars. He was bred at the famous Walnut Hal) Farm, which on the same day received 10,000 dollars for another colt and 55D0 dollars for Spangled Maiden, who won at Motukarara on Saturday The 10,000-dollar yearling Gay Song was sold as a trotter He did not make good at that gait, but recently paced three consecutive heats in 2min 4Jsec. 2min 31sec and 2mln 3Jsec. The Trotting Cup

Only two square trotters in Monte Carlo and Reta Peter have succeeded in winning the Trotting Cup Monte Carlo won the first race In 1904 in 4min 44 2-ssec. Reta Peter won in 1920. The stakes were awarded to her In 1921 on a protest lodged against Sherwood on the ground of interference which some thought was more apparent than real Pacers have ruled the roost in every other case. Wildwood Junior won in 1909 and 1910, Ahuriri in 1925 and 1926, Peter Bingen in 1928 and 1929. Harold Logan In 1931 and 1932. Indianapolis in 1934-5-6. and Lucky Jack in 1937 and 1939

BEAU VITE’S EARNINGS NO SPECIAL RESTRICTIONS (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 5. No special restrictions have been imposed by the New Zealand Government in regard to Beau Vite’s earnings, according to official quarters, which regard the report as a newspaper story. It Is pointed out that the New Zealand Government could, if necessary, purchase the horse’s winnings and establish credit in Australia, and pay the owner the equivalent In New Zealand currency. A Press Association mesage from Auckland states that, interviewed concerning the racing stakes won by Beau Vite in Australia, the Minister ot Finance (Mr W Nash) said that whatever was done would obviously be an arrangement between the Commonwealth Bank in Australia and the Reserve Bank in New Zealand.

AT WINGATUI The course proper at Wingatui ' was open yesterday morning with the trestles about the nfiddie of the track. A run on the rails was allowed two-year-olds, A strong northerly wind assisted horses to record fast work along the back and helped tto steady when finishing against it up the straight. Nightcalm and Boloyna covered six furlongs in Imin 19 2-ssec, the first two along the back in 25sec and the last half-mile in 54 2-ssec.. Withdrawal covered the same ground in Imin 20 l-ssec. Sir Amyas and Spearthrust broke away at the seven-furlong post, and, travelling fast along the back, covered the first two furlongs in 24 4-ssec and seven in Imin 33 l-ssec. Sir Amyas went well, and Spearthrust galloped well when getting away from a moving start. Taxpayer was ( going better than Gay Lancer at the end of seven furlongs in Imin 33 2-ssec—the last six in Imin 20 l-ssec. They went fast along the back. Strip was treated to steady work, and apparently did not suffer by his trip to Gore. Night Pal left Hanlon several lengths behind at the end of a mile in Imin 43sec, the first half in 50sec and the last seven in Imin 30 2-ssec. Night Pal shapes well on the track, but does not always repeat it in a race. Lord Nuffield was treated to easy work on the sand track, and shaped without any apparent signs of unsoundness. Norseman, Sir Hugh. All Style, Green Boa and others were allotted useful exercise. SOUTHERN STABLES CANDIDATES FOR RICCARTON (Special to Daily Times) INVERCARGILL, Nov. 5. Mr W. E. Hazlett railed Milford and Colonel ROuge through to Riccarton today in the care of T. J. Boyle. The stable apprentice, J. L. Strathern, was also in the party. Mr Hazlett will leave for Riccarton on Thursday. Milford and Colonel Rouge were in great order when they left here. Colonel Rouge was successful at Gore when having his first start tills season. He Is a hack above the average. Sparkle has been withdrawn from all engagements at the Cup meeting. The Colonel Cygnus mare did not race up to expectations in her one start at Gore, and it became evident that she is not yet ready to show her best, though she looks well and has been galloping freely in her work. It was not until the autumn last season that Sparkle showed her best form, and it may be the same this season. She will make her next appearance in the Southland Cup this month. W, Anderton also left this morning for Riccarton with Wild Career. The Balboa gelding Is now eight years old. but he has lost none of his galloping ability and is carrying himself like a two-year-old. He showed good winning form at Gore and should give a good account of himself at Riccarton. Wild Career’s victories include two Riverton Cups, and he holds the time record for the race. Neither Is he any. stranger to Riccarton, and as a four-year-old there he ran Great Star to a head In the Cressy Handicap (one mile), won in imin 38 3-ssec. He will be ridden on Saturday by J. L. Strathern, who was successful on him at Gore.

Doubleack and Heidelberg are not making the trip. Doubleack took no ham from his racing at Gore, but his form there was not good enough to warrant the trip. . ' Foxlove, who has been off the scene for 12 months, has rejoined F. W. Ellis’s team, and the Gallant Fox gelding is carrying a lot of condition. The leg Which caused his spell has hardened up in a pleasing manner, and his trainer is sanguine about his prospects of standing a preparation. Foxlove was one of the best handicap horses in the south before he went amiss.

Spendthrift and Colonel .French have been put into work again by Mr W. E. Hazlett, and the former, in particular, is looking very much benefited by his spell. R. E. McLellan has recommissioned Waltoru, who has done well during his holiday. Black Bard is also an active member of McLellan’s team again. Royal Lancer, Spanish Lad, Gold Flight, and the two-year-old filly Desert Maid were In good order when they left fpr Riccarton last week. Royal Lancer Is in grand form, and will have a big southern following in his engagements. Spanish Lad will be a much better, horse than when he raced at the Dunedin meeting, and should pay his way on the trip. Gold Flight showed brilliant speed in her races at Gore, but stopped badly each day. The outings should, improve her, and it would not surprise if she got on the winning list at Riccarton. It will be recalled that her full-brother. Dark Flight, just scraped home in a hack race at the Gore spring meeting last year and then went on to Riccarton to show brilliant winning form.

RICCARTON NOTES TRACKS FAST (Special ro Daily Times) CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 5. The weather was ideal for the work at Riccarton this morning, and some, good gallops were registered on the outside of the course proper, while a number of horses went on the plough, which was fast. The Cup candidate The Buzzer went well on the course, while Royal Chief finished resolutely over a mile on the plough. Among the Stewards’ Handicap horses, Sir Beau, Density and Don't Forget went brilliantly over five furlongs, while Spanish Lad and Gold Flight pleased over six. On the grass, Density reeled off five furlongs in Imin 1 2-ssec, the last four in 49 l-ssec. Sir Beau equalled that time and seemed to be going comfortably at the finish. Lambourn beat Sly Fox over seven furlongs in Imin 31sec, while Eulogist did Imin 31 l-ssec and Globe Trotter Imin 31 3-sseo. The full Journey took 2min 15sec, the last mile Imin 45 3-ssec, and the last half 53 3-ssec.

After breakfast, Ferriby beat Knight Commander by three lengths over six furlongs, the last four in SOsec. Spanish Lad did the best six furlongs of the morning, Imin 15sec. Desert Maid brought him home, finishing a length in front and doing the last half-mile In 49sec.

Wild Coon had his head in front of St. Cloud and Dictate at the end of five furlongs in Imin 2 l-ssec, the last four in 49 l-ssec

Cape Gabo ran a mile in Imin 47 2-ssec. Lifeguard beat Sir Frederick easily In Imin 45 2-ssec.

Ageratum and Myrald took Imin 18 3-ssec for six furlongs, while Royal Lancer and Monopoly sprinted half a mile in 50 l-ssec.

On the Plough.—Pleading easily beat Shikari over five furlongs in Imin 2 2-ssec, Sweet Mystery and Blue Abbey Piking Imin 3sec. All Night did Imin 3 2-ssec, finishing comfortably. Not Out and Glenora Boy went very freely In Imin 2sec. Over six furlongs, Gold Flight did Imin 15 2-ssec. Gay Parade registering Imin 15 3-ssec, Great Night Imin 16 3-ssec, King's Toast Imin 17sec, and Blue Coat Imin 18sec, the last-named pair showing a lot ot speed early. Muffler went very well to do Imin 28sec for *even furlongs. Doria registering Imin 28 4-ssec, the last three in 37 2-ssec. Great Night took Imin 25 2-ssec, going well, with Big Game as a mate over the last half-mile.

Royal Chief, with Iceland Spar as a mate for the last five furlongs, ran a mile In Imin 45sec. He came home strongly, registering 37 2-ssec for the last three furlongs. Rue was halt a length in front of Sovereign Lady over a mile in Imin 44sec. Settlement and Prudent Prince -took Imin 44 3-ssec.

Capricious went nine lux longs, the last six in Imin 18 3-ssec and the last three in 37 4-ssec. This mare is on the improve. A number of other horses did pace work only, among them being Swordstick. Night Dress, Passaform and Second Innings, all of whom raced last Saturday. , , Dividend (1. Walther) was schooled over four hurdles, giving a safe display, without being sent at top speed. The following trainers arrived from the North Island this morning, with their teams:—T. Geoige—Trench Law, Pearl of Asia, Serenata, Phyto, Par Avion and Pay Roll; L. Butler, Auto Sweep and Windsor Chief: D. Marks. Taurangi and Ruatitl

THE V.R.C. MEETING RESULTS OF MINOR EVENTS AURIE’S STAR SUCCESSFUL STAKES TO COOCH BEHAR (United Press Association) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) MELBOURNE. Nov. 8. (Received Nov. 5, at 11.30 p.m.) Early morning rain affected the Cup attendance, which was excellent under the circumstances. Conditions improved as the day advanced, and the going was satisfactory. . . . The Sydney jumper Valhalla, In his first start over the battens in Melbourne, outclassed his rivals in the Cup Hurdle Race. Mamilllus ran a game race but was no match for the winner. North Cape finished third. Mr Bailey Payten, the trainer of Valhalla, and the owner. Mr P, H. Osborne, were associated with Ecarte’s win in this event in 1023. Aurle's Star had a comfortable win in the Railway High-welght Handicap, and led all the way. All Veil finished well after a slow beginning. David Innls was third. The winner’s weight of 11,4 is not a record, as Fujisan won twice with 11.0 and 12.1 respectively. ■ Cradle Song went at a great pace early in the Mimosa Stakes, but weakened. The report of Melbourne Cup will be found on page 7. Cooch Behar had an impressive victory Primavera ran a good race. Her Highness finished well. „ . . , ■ St. Constant and High Caste staged a great finish in the Yan Yean Stakes. St. Constant would have won outright but for attempting to savage High Caste 100 yards from the post. Remarc was a good third. Following are the results: — CUP HURDLE HANDICAP. Of £7OO. Two, miles. THE WELLINGTON CUP RICHEST RACE IN DOMINION (Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON. Nov. 5. The Wellington Cup, to be run in January, is. to carry a stake of £3IOO, including a trophy valued at £IOO, which makes it the richest race In the Dominion. This season prize money totalling £14,950 has been decided on for the three days of the meeting, the programme being identical with last January’s, except for the value of trophies, — t NEW ZEALAND CUP MEETING The final payments and acceptances for the opening card of the New Zealand Cup did not cause any serious shrinkage in the fields, and they will be sure to supply some capital racing. It must be said that several of those remaining in the New Zealand Cup appear to hold a remote chance on what they have accomplished in the past,'but apparently their trainers expect them to stay on when acting under a light weight. Only four in a fi§ld of 19 have eight stone or more, and the remaining lot should not be hampered by weight. At present, there is nothing in sight likely to oust Royal Chief from the position he holds as favourite. The final gallops may throw some additional light on possibilities in connection with the race, and this could only come about by something shaping particularly well. The mission of the light weights would be, of course, to make the top weights carry their load all the Way. but the danger exists that some of the small riders may be beaten before the horse. A slow run race would suit Taurangi, as she could probably turn on more speed than any other horse In the race. The Buzzer and Sly Fox have both supplied proof of stamina, and so have Capricious and Dictate, who finished in the places behind Yours Truly in last year's race. Dictate also ran third In the Auckland Cup of 1938. Royal Chief meets Capricious on 51b better terms than last year, and Dictate comes in on 21b better terms with the top weight. Yours Truly 7.0 was a perfectly trained horse when he won ii’ 3mln 22 2-ssec, which Is just a fraction outside Palantua’s race record of 3min 22 l-ssec. This shows that Royal Chief, with his weight, can be right on the premises in a fast run race. The next best times put up were the 3mln 23 l-ssec when Fast Passage won in 1932 and the 3min 23 3-ssec ran by Chide in 1929, and Cerne Abbas In 1937 A field of 15 continues In the Stewards' Handicap, and Sir Beau has become a strong favourite. He was a high-class two-year-old, and has trained on this season, in which he has scored two wins in three starts. He finished up his two-year-old season by winning at the Wellington Cup meeting with 9.6 in Imin 12isec, and such a high-class colt reads rather formidable at 8.3. In recent years second season horses in Eulalle 8.1 who won handsomely from an outside position at the barrier, Paper Slipper, who won with 8.5, and Beaulivre, who last year had the finish to himself when carrying 8.10, have been successful in the race. Three-year-olds are always dangerous under a handy weight when they retain early speed strengthened with the stamina that comes with the growing strength of a second season horse. There is a good field engaged In the Welcome Stakes, although some of them will have to make a very marked Improvement to have a chance to head off Par Avion and Foreign Coin on the running at the Wellington spring meeting. Silver Lily represents good form amongst the South Islanders and Salutation looked open to improvement when she ran at the Dunedin spring meeting. An Interesting feature of the acceptances consists in the number that have been paid up for in the Spring Plate, despite the possibility of Belle Cain being in the field.
