COUNCIL’S MONTHLY. MEETING .■ The monthly meeting of the Bruce;-j County Council was held yesterday,, and-, was attended by Crs W. Moore (in the chair). J. Clark, H. M. Driver, D.iMcGregor. W. J. Sheat, J. Allison .A. King. A. Kenton, A. Higgs, T. Gage and V. Wilson. The engineer of the Lower Clutha River, : Trust,-wrote advising that-the trust was/ considering the.-.extension tof 4he:iexisting',i flood bank to the Matau bridge. This/ would do away ,witlj& a flood; approach;" to the bridge on such occasions as in ; May last. He sought permission to carry, out these works.—Cr Renton pointed'out that this would not stop flooding, and it would be better to wait until it was possible to raise the road.—After hearing the engineer’s report the council .decided u to leave the matter in Cr Renton's hands. Hay, organisers lor the Home Guard, would be in Milton on, Friday and would meet thd Home Guard Committee and other interested organ!-. ' The board’s representative on the District Highways Council wrote stating that he was unable to recommend to the board any increase in the amount already appropriated for the Stoney Creek—Hillend highway.—lt was decided to’ make application to transfer small- amounts from other highways to the Stoney .Creek-Hill-! end section. ' ‘ Tenders were accepted for various cent ; v tracts as follows:—Metalling 27 chains and making one culvert on Grellett’s road, S v Smart (£SO Us): gravelling Mount Stuart to Manuka road, Milton Transport, Ltd. (£3 8s Ud per chain); gravelling Hillend to Mount Stuart, J. J. .Brogan (5s 6d per yard): carting and spreading gravel, at Taieri Beach, A. Troupsea (Is 4d P«r. yard): gravelling 70 chains on, the Black-. burn-Mount Stuart road,, J. tJ. Brogan (6s 9d per yard): metalling on the Taieri Beach-Waihola road,, S. The report of the engineer .(Mr J. A. Bateman) on work done in the county during the month was adopted, Tim ranger and motor traffic inspector (Mr J. H. Morgan) reported that 18 head of cattle had been foundJ^?£ eri given county roads during, the month. . Seven applicants had been tested f ° r fivers licences, six passing-and; one belng hrid over for further practice.—The report was adopted, and Mr Morgan was appointed dog tax collector.
