PUNISHMENT FOR CRIME

EFFECT ON PRISONERS' WIVES <Per United Press Association) WELLINGTON. Nov. 5. Sentencing Robert William Bell Stiles, aged 45. on breaking, entering and' allied charges, in the Supreme Court to-day. Mr Justice Ostler said that counsel had made a strong plea. It was based mainly on the fact that the punishment would fall on the prisoner’s wife. The sad thing about the crime was that the women had to bear the brunt of it. He felt he would be betraving the public interest if he were to admit Stiles to probation. He imposed reformative detention for a period not exceeding 18 months. Douglas Martin Small, aged 21. who appeared with Stiles, was committed to the Borstal for a period not exceeding two years.
