CONCERN EXPRESSED

WIDENING OF QUEEN’S DRIVE REMOVAL OF TREES At a meeting of the Dunedin Amenities Society, held on Monday, concern was expressed by Dr C. E, Hercus and Mrs H. L. Cook at the action of the City Corporation in cutting down beautiful trees for the purpose of widening the Queen’s drive at the back of Miss Theomin’s property. Dr Hercus referred to the work as vandalism of a type which should be resisted by all members of the society, and his remarks were strongly supported by Mrs Cook The secretary (Mr A. C. Cameronl stated that some months ago the city engineer (Mr S. G. Scoular) had informed him that the Queen’s drive would have to be widened in two or three places, this spot being one of them. Mr Scoular had explained that this section of the road was a bus route, and large buses had difficulty ,in negotiating Theomin’s corner and at the same time keeping to the correct side 'of the road A deep water course constituted a further danger and. as this had to be shifted further over, the widening would necessitate the removal of certain trees.

, Mr Cameron added that he knew the spot well, and was convinced that the widening was necessary in the public interest. He had i-eported the matter 16 the chairman (Mr Crosby Morris). Mr Scoular had indicated that only one large tree would be removed, and was anxious to do as little damage to the trees as possible. For this reason he was not taking out the corner tree on Miss Theomin’s side of the r®ad. It was resolved on the motion of Mr J. C. Begg seconded by Mr P. O Smellie: “That a deputation consisting of Messrs J. L Salmond J. C Begg and Dr Mullin visit the spot immediately in company (if possible) with the chairman of the Works Committee and city engineer, and that such committee be given power to act.”
