Humphries, has joined W. H. Dwyer’s stable at Awapuni. Top-weight In a field of 15 acceptors for the Teschemaker Handicap the top-weight is 8.3. to be carried by Queen of Song. Disappointments Those whose form disappointed at Wingatui included Capricious. Winning Rival, Passaform. Sparkle, Spearthrust, Nightcalm and Hearth. When racing at Wingatui. Passaform moved rather short and made a poor show in his race. Apparently the trouble Is not serious, as he figures amongst the acceptances for Timaru. He will, however, require a soft track to assist his chance.

The Timaru Meeting' Good acceptances■ were received for the Timaru meeting';; to be - held on Saturday next. Master Dingle is-the only absentee from the Otaio . Hurdles. Royal Chief, Willie Win. Lord Puck, and Dunstan dropped but of the Teschemaker Handicap, leaving a field of 16 to go to the post. If the South-Ganterbury Jockey Club had adhered tdKgSiwo-dayi spring meeting the programmeiWould probably have attracted northern; horses raced at Wingatui and on their homeward -jpurney. Horses raced at Wingatid 'retUrnfid horth on Tuesday, and a two-day programme may have tempted owners#© break the journey at Timaru and perhaps led-to more support from Wingatui and southern stables. As it is. a number of horses in racing shape are not represented at Timaru simply because owners’.; will not patronise oneday meetings, which rrjean considerable time and travelling expenses. Queen of Song

Queen of Song looks well on paper at •8.3 In the Teschemaker Handicap. It Is, however a question If she is in shape to take advantage ■of the opportunity. Last season she started 11 times and scored a win, a third and a second. She won at Ashburton in November with 9.0 by a length from • Swordstick 7.12 in 2min 6 3-ssec. In the Wyndham Cup Doubleack 7,0 won from Swordstick 8.0, who was half a length in front of Queen of Song 9.0 in 2min 6sec. In the Midsummer Handicap Willie Win 8.8 won from Queen of Song 8.6 and Settlement 7.11 in 2mih 8 2-ssec. Night Dress 7.4 was unplaced.' In her final start Queen of Song 8.6 was unplaced in the Dunedin Cup. On a softish track Queen of Song might prove hard, but condition rather than handicap is the dominating factor in the matter.

Mr A J. Parris reported to a meeting of the committee of the Timaru Trotting Club that it had been found difficult to secure sufficient entries from 1 trotters alone to conduct the matinee meeting. and it was decided to include a race for draught horses as well as one for gallopers. As the Jockey Club, which was attached to the Navy Queen, had provided one of the races, it seemed equitable that a proportion of the proceeds should be allocated to the Navy Queen The Air Force Queen Committee. Mr Parris said was’agreeable to leaving the allocation to the Trotting Club On th a motion of Mr W A. Piddington it was decided to hand £25 from the proceeds to the Navy Queen Committee...

RICCARTON NOTES JUMPERS IN ACTION < Special ro Daxlv Times; CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 16. The weather was bright and warm for this morning’s work at Riccarton. There was not much doing on the fiat, the horses being restricted to easy pacing, but a number of hurdlers provided interest with their schooling tasks. Leopardstown (G. Ridgway) ana Jewish Lad (H. W. Hlbberd) went over four hurdles. They travelled at a sound pace and gave a good exhibition. Mungatoon (E Baker) followed this pair, and, though he rapped the first flight, he jumped the others very well '

Far East (H. Register; was schooled over four hurdles. It was his first experience since August, when he had a fall, but he gave a smart display tills morning He has been in work only a few weeks after a spell, but he has come on nicely, so he may be in good order for the hurdle races here next month.

Donadea shaped exceptionally well in a run over six hurdles. He was ridden by R. Register, who will have the mount at Washdyke on Saturday. Recollection (A. Leach) gave one ot his customary exhibitions of fast jumping in a school over four hurdles. He is in great order, and should be hard to beat in his hurdle engagements at Trentham this month. Although Mungatoon is booked to race at the South Canterbury meeting on Saturday, his programme is uncertain yet He has been left in his events, and a decision will not be made till later in the week. E. Baker will be his pilot if he is started in the hurdle race, while the apprentice, S. Green, will have the mount if he is reserved for the Teschemaker Handicap. All the Riccarton horses who raced at the Dunedin meeting arrived home last night. Some of them did not do well on the trip, so it may be unwise to accept all the form shown at Wingatui at its face value. It was thought that the noise and bustle of the territorial camp may have had something to do with visiting horses going off their feed. The defection of Royal Chief from the Teschemaker Handicap at Washdyke was not unexpected. When F D. Jones left for the Dunedin meeting he expressed the opinion that his intention was to run Royal Chief only twice more before sending him to Trentham, and the Washdyke nomination was really made as a precaution in case he deemed it inadvisable to start twice at Wingatui. The Chief horse has come home none the worse for his trip, and he should race well at Trentham. after which he should be at his best for the New Zealand Cup. Willie Win was scratched for the New Zealand Cup at 10.15 a.m. to-day. Though All Night was allowed to drop out of his Washdyke engagement, he is going on well in his work. It will be no surprise, however, if he is reserved now for hack events at the Riccarton carnival. • .

There are Indications of curtailment In some of our teams nominated for the Wellington meeting this month. The apprentice R. Caddy is back here, with his employer, A. S. Ellis, after being absent for six weeks in the North Island, where he t was temporarily in L. Dulleu’s stable. During his absence he did some riding and he won a race on Eupatrid at the Otaki meeting.

WAIMATE HUNT CLUB SMALL LOSS FOR YEAR i Special to Daily Times) WAIMATE. Oct. 16. Despite war conditions, the finances of the Waimate District Hunt Club show a loss on the year of only £34 13s, according to the annual report. The year opened with a credit balance of £489 0s lid and liabilities of £lO, and closed with a balance of £457 10s 6d and liabilities of £67 16s 9d.

The unsettled state of world affairs and the fact that many members of the club were on active service was responsible for the abandonment of the point-to-point meeting. It, was decided, however, to make every effort to keep the club going by the efforts of those who remained at home, and accordingly the annual race meeting-was held on Saturday, July 20. The club had decided to devote the proceeds of the meeting to patriotic purposes, and. in the event of the fixture proving unprofitable, to make a donation t’o patriotic funds.

" From a racing and sporting point of view, the meeting was a very successful one. there being good average fields, with several close finishes, and altogether an excellent day’s racing was enjoyed.” the report states. “ From a financial point, however, we had a loss on the day of £6B 14s 4d. This may be accounted for by the fact that this year, under the new regulations, clubs are not now allowed tcV retain the 1 per cent, of the totalisator tax. as has been done in previous years, but have to pay the full 5 per cent. This alone made a difference of £sl 15s 3d on the day’s receipts, which, with an increase of the stakes by £ll on the previous year, made a total of £62 15s 3d more man our payments for our race meeting last year. In spite of the loss on the day your committee decided to make a donation from the funds of the hunt for patriotic purposes, and the sum of £65 5s was voted, which, with a handsome donation of £lO from the stakes he had won. given by Mr W. E. Hazlett, of Southland, brought the total of our effort towards patrotic funds to £75 ss. “ Making this effort, the hunt received valuable support and assistance from the hotel proprietors and owners of stables in Waimate, the former granting free accommodation for trainers and attendants and the latter free stabling for horses This was much appreciated by owners and trainers, and, no doubt, helped our meeting considerably.

The hunting season opened in May, and the following was consistently good. In the earlier part of the season the ground was rather heavy, but conditions improved as the season progressed. The weather was excellent, there being ought sunshine on most days, and consequently the hounds hunted very well. Three horses qualified, and two of them raced . “i 6 , hunt meeting in Canterbury, Valens “® a^- heating for first place in our Hunt Club Cup and Golden Glow winning the Christchurch Hunt Club Cup. We extend to tne owners of these horses our congratulations.”

The report expressed the thanks ot the club to those farmers who generously pernutted hunting over their land, and to the members and supporters who had assisted the function of the club in everv way.
