WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

At the monthly meeting of the Waltati Institute held on Tuesday last Mrs Ferguson presided. The motto was “ Kindness, like grain, increases by sowing,” and the roll call “My favourite author.” There was a fine display of spring flowers, the competition for the choicest bloom resulting:—Mrs Wiley (polyanthus! 1. Mesdames Robinson and South (daffodils) 2. Mrs Blacklaws gave an interesting demonstration cn Italian quilting. Further collections were taken for the soldiers' parcel fund. Resignations from two members who had left the district were received with regret. The hostesses were Mesdames O’Fee, J. Robertson, jun., and W. R. Robinson.
The Karitane Institute met on Thursday last. Mrs Taiaroa presiding. The motto was “After burying the hatchet, don’t mark the spot.” and the roll call, “Pet superstition,” The competitions resulted:—Garden on a soup plate— Mrs Qibbs 1. Mrs Taiaroa, Mrs Tubman and Mrs Ruihble (equal) 2; bloom —Mrs Rumble and Mrs Milne (equal) 1. Mrs Patterson 2. Mrs Tubman was elected delegate to the half-yearly council meeting at Naseby Miss Newson demonstrated on the, grafting of the kitchener toe on a sock. Mrs Olsen and Mrs Tubman were in charge of the social half hour, and Mrs Rumble and Mrs Souquet were the hostesses.
, Mrs E. Stanley presided over the monthly meeting of the Dunback Institute. The motto was, “ Wise sayings often fall on barren ground, but a kind word is never thrown away,” and the roll call. “An economical hint." On behalf of the members, Mrs Stanley presented Mrs Gunn, a recent, bride, with a gift. An appliqued cloth and directions on how to do applique were sent by Miss Mavis Buick, of Airedale A Christmas cake and gift will be sent to Miss Bell, of Shag Valley, a member of the W.I. now doing war work in England. A Christmas cake has also been forwarded to Nurse E. A. Wilson, who left with the third echelon. A Christmas gift will be sent to the link institute at Shalford. Surrey. England. The social half-hour was supervised bv Misses M, Mclntosh and Hewett. The competitions resulted:—Khaki cake, Miss P. Hewelt 1. Mrs D. Matheson 2: something for a soldier Mrs Titterton 1, Miss P. Hewett 2, The hostesses were 'Mesdames F. Bell, Matheson. and Campbell.
