McFarlane has retired after 20 years' service with the Public Works Department at Auckland Mr McFarlane entered the service of the Railways Department just over 50 years ago He resigned in 1896 to taKt up private practice as a mine and land surveyor. In 1907 he ioined the engineering staff of the Auckland City Ccuncil. Two years later he transferred to the Auckland and Suburban Drainage Board. Subsequently he was again in private practice and acted for a period as engineer to the Coromandel and Bay of Islands County Councils. After joining the Public Works Department in 1920 Mr McFarlane supervised the construction of many important works.
