RANFURLY Rugby Football The Rugby football season in the Maniototo district was concluded last Saturday, when the final match was played betwen Ranfurly and Matakanui in a special challenge for the White Horse Cup. The game attracted considerable interest and the football played was of a fairly high standard. The first spell was evenly contested, and at half time it appeared that Ranfurly, who had a five-Doint lead, would be fully extended to hold the cup. In the second spell, however, there was a better understanding between backs and forwards, and halfway through the Ranfurly backs took complete charge and increased the score to 21 points in a short time. A feature of the game was an excellent try scored by J. C. Kearney, who. after "selling the dummy." ran more than half the lgagth of the ground. The final score was 21 points to nil. OTUREHUA Rainfall The rainfall registered in Oturehua for September was 186 points, compared with 351 points in 1939. The rainfall for the nine months of this year is 21.88 inches, compared with 15.63 inches for the corresponding period in 1939. The district is looking particularly well at present and the grass is much further on than at this time last year, and farming prospects have seldom been better. MIDDLEMARCH Power Board Meeting A meeting of residents in the southern portion of the Strath-Taieri and Sutton Electric Power Board area was held on Thursday evening. Mr F. M. Howell was voted to the chair, and the Otago Power Board was represented by Mr J. B. McGill (who convened the meeting) and the engineer. Twenty residents in the area out of a possible of 34 were present. Mr McGill explained in detail the position as it existed that evening, and reported on the canvass for guarantees that had been made by the engineer and himself in the proposed area during the last week. He stated that the total amount of guarantees required was £625. of which £543 had been guaranteed.—After discussion, it was agreed that an opportunity be given to those present to increase their contributions, and anoher £55 was added, leaving the small margin of £27 to be made up. Messrs F. M. Howell. D. Gallagher, and T. Carruthers were appointed to interview absent members in order to make up the deficiency.—Mr W. D. on behalf of residents in the area in which he resides, made a request to the board to have the reticulation which was promised in 1937 proceeded with.—Mr McGill explained the position, and said that repeated application had been made to the Electric Controller. Wellington, but had been turned down. He was prepared, however, to recommend to the board that this area should be included in the application beinp made for the southern area. ROXBURGH Air Force Ball The ball which was held in aid of the Air Force Queen in the Roxburgh Dance Hall was a great success. The function was well patronised, and the funds benefited to the extent of £3O. The hall was decorated in a novel fashion, the walls being draped with blue bunting. Overhead model planes (made by school children) flying in formation were converging on a large model of a crippled Dornier bomber. At 9.30 p.m. the official party arrived preceded by the two Stedman childern attired in air force uniform. In the party were Miss Mary Bennetts, Countess of Tuapeka. the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs F. A. Laloli). Mr John Bennetts. Mr and Mrs W. F. Bennetts. Mr John George, and Mrs R. George. A feature of the dance was a " black-out," the hall being darkened. A "searchlight" from an "anti-air-craft" position played on the dancers and the flight formation overhead. Mercer lost to Mrs S. Frew. Mrs W. Hoban lost to Miss D. Bain. Tough Cup: Miss R. Hay lost to Mrs L. Faigan. Mrs E. Bishop lost to Miss N. Bain.
