The monthly meeting of the Maniototo branch was held at Ranfurly on September 25. Miss Eudey presiding. The roll call vas "Name a Scottish town." An interesting tall' on Scotland was ven by Mr R. J. E. Smith, of Wedderburn. The competitions resulted: Shortbread—Mrs Helm 1, Mrs Malcolm 2, Mrs Tait 3; oatcakes—Mrs F Mathias 1, Miss Eudey 2, Mrs Helm 3. The hostesses were Mesdames F. Roberts. F. Hore, Williamson, Lynch, and Gilchrist. A collection organised by the Maniototo branch for the Fighter Plane Fund met with a good response, and the amount of £43 has been forwarded to the Women's Division headquarters in Dunedin.
The monthly meeting of the Taieri Mouth branch was held on Wednesday, Mrs Sinclair presiding. The motto was "No reward without labour," and the roll call, "The kind of book 1 like best." It was decided to have a £2 parcel of disabled soldiers' goods for the next meeting and it was proposed to send 10s to the Makogai Leper Fund, to which a member added a further donation of ss. A comeptition. "mat or cushion from scraps of wool or material," resulted: Mrs Borthwick 1. Mrs R. Joseph 2. Mrs C. Marshall served afternoon tea. * * *
The Bannockburn branch met on Tuesday evening Mrs Campbell presiding. The sum of £1 Is was given to the Fighter Plane Fund, and a parcel of Disabled Soldiers' handicraft met with a ready sale. The roll call was "Recollections of school days.' The hostesses were Mesdames Olds, Smith, and Miss Parcell.
The September meeting of the Hillend branch was held on Saturday evening, Mrs J. A. Cunningham presiding One new member was welcomed. The rob call was, "An economy hint." Several garments for refugees were handed in. The competition—best bloom—was won by Mrs Moir, with Mrs Bishop second. It was resolved to forward a case of food to the Dunedin Services' Welcome Club. The members of the Farmers' Union were entertained at supper, when Mrs J. McMillan acted as hostess.
The Septembei meeting of the Palmerston brand was presided over by Mrs Ross. The roll call was, "A paragraph about the old identities of the Waihemo County" It was decided to send a Christmas parcel to the Makogai leperr and to supply the Services' Welcome Club with produce during the second week in November. Mrs Lee, of Waikouaiti, spoke about executive affairs. A play-reading was given by Mesdames Wedge. Coutts, Misses li. Sheat F. Ross. E. Brown,
and C. Service. Members of the Farmers' Union were guests at supper. The hostesses were Mesdames Wedge, Coutts, Sheat, jun., Misses H. Sheat, F. Ross, and E. Brown.
The September meeting of the Tapanui branch was presided over by Mrs Mills. The social item was a travel talk by the Rev. J. S. Somerville. The competitions resulted:— Novelty—Mrs White 1, Mr s Arnold 2. Mrs J. Kerse 3. thrift article—Mrs Williams 1. Miss Kirk 2. Mrs White 3; bloom—Mrs Mills 1. Mrs Sheddan 2. Mesdames D. Kane and Arnold (equal) 3. It was decided to support the leper appeal. During the month members held a sale of produce, cakes, etc. when £32 was raised for the Fighter 'Plane Fund.
Mrs A. A. Mays presided at the monthly meeting of the North Otago Federation. Mrs J. F. Ericson gave a report on tier trip to the V.O. school, which was held at Gore. It was stated that a V.O. school would be held at Oamaru next April. Kennedy proposed a vote of thanks to Mrs Ericson. The hostesses were Mesdames Kennedy and Dowthwaite.
The Ratanui branch held its ninth birthday party on September 20 A community sing, ably conducted by Mr Sands with Mrs Shaw, jun.. as pianist, was much enjoyed Items were given by Miss Ross (pianoforte solo), Mrs Shaw jun. (song) Mrs Sheed (character sketch), Miss K Fiveash (piano-accordion solo), Mrs Rodgers (song), and Mr and Mrs Sands (duet) Visitors from the Owaka Valley branch and the Owaka Institute expressed good wishes. The. birthday cake, which, with its nine candles had been made by Mrs Shaw. jun. was cut by Mrs Mcßratney, of Owaka During the evening Mrs Rodgers (president), speaking on behalf of the members, said farewell to Mrs Wood, who will shortly leave the district, and presented her with a token of appreciation. After supper the floor was cleared for dancing.
