At Timaru Nominations for the South Canterbury Jockey Club's spring meeting are due on Monday next. Wild Coon A. report from Christchurch states that Wild Coon is a doubtful starter at Wingatui. Dunedin Spring Meeting Acceptances for the first day of the Dunedin spring meeting are due on Monday next. The Buzzer According to northern reports, The Buzzer has been making pleasing progress in his preparation for important events ahead. Well Forward Some of the two-year-olds at Riccarton have been galloped over half a mile, and apparently they are well forward in condition. Horsewomen Tn view of the fact that women cannot hold a trainer's licence in Australia, it is interesting to note that three women owner-trainers had winners at the Ohinemuri meeting. Sir Crusoe The speedy Defoe colt Sir Crusoe is booked to race at Otaki and expected to shape well in some of the principal sprints run at the spring meetings. . Shikari , Shikari was stopping at the end of a mile gallop with Winning Rival on Thursday, and the fact does not brighten his chance in the Dunedin Guineas. He is said to be showing signs of trouble in the respiratory organs.. Taurangl The Dominion reports that all going well, it is intended that Taurangi will contest the New Zealand Cup, so that W. J. Mudfdrd will be riding her and not Areas. Mr W. Duncan has lost the services of Scandal, at least temporarily. He pulled iid very sore after racing at Marton. Lacking in Push The judicial committee of the Ohinemuri Jockey Club held an inquiry into the running of Willen, who finished fourth in the Maramarua Steeplechase on Saturday. The committee considered that the rider, F Cleaver, made an error of judgment in not pushing Willen along from the three-furlong post and reprimanded him, • Chary , One of the smartest two-year-olds seen out last season i was the Inflation colt Chary, who won three times, was twice second, and once third in seven starts. His. wins included the C.J.C. Champagne Stakes, in which he defeated Shikari by a length and a-half in lmin 11 3-ssec. Doria was unplaced. Chary should develop into a more than useful three-year-old. Spanish Lad Spanish Lad has run some good races on the Wingatui course, and he holds the six furlong time record for the track of lmin 12 3-ssec, which he recorded when he won the Federal Handicap last December under 8.5. At his. other appearance at Wingatui last season he was successful in the Publicans' Handicap with 8.6. After running third with 8.8 to Density (7.9) and Duncannon (8.0) in the Great Easter Handicap at Riccarton, Spanish Lad won the Templeton Handicap (seven furlongs) under 8.10, the minor places being filled by Rakahanga (7.10) and Nightcalm (8.7). Spanish Lad was the leading stake winner among the Southland-trained horses lasl season with £ll6O, the result of four wins and two minor places in 16 . starts. The Balboa gelding is down to make his next appearance in the Air Force Handicap (six furlongs) at Wingatui next week and. says the Southland News, with 8.12 he looks to have an excellent chance of adding to the good record he has on the northern course. Mr Martin McGratb The death is reported' of Mr Martin McGrath, who for many years was a popular and well-known personage in sDorting circles, particularly in the Central Otago district, where he at different times owned hotels in Cromwell and Alexandra. In his early days Mr McGrath was connected 'with different racing stables, and in later years owned a galloper or two, but mostly leaned towards the light-harness horse. Mr McGrath comes from an old-time snorting family and his father was at one time proprietor of the Harp of Erin Hotol, now known as Branson's Hotel. Mr Martin McGrath served in the Great War with the forces in Egypt, The Apprenticp Every encouragement ana opportunity ■hould be provided for apprentices, but they should not be allowed to claim an

allowance in the two principal events on a card. In such races they are up against the best riders on the scene, and generally suffer by comparison much the same as a horse running out of his class. Trainers are. of course, anxious to put up their apprentices and it is wise to supply mounts as often as possible but more wisely on other people's horses. Sometimes the apprentice allowance works out as follows:—Weight 8.0, allowance 71b, equals 7.7, plus 141 b for lack of experience, plus 141 b for getting into trouble, plus 141 b for getting left, so that it readsweight 8.0, allowance 71b, carried 7 7 plus about 3.0. Horse's chance, nil. Still, after wading his way through the plus and minus operations of apprenticeship, the day may come when the riding will be on a wave of success. On the stage the learner does not play opposite the stars but it is a common practice in racing. For Australia Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd., have just completed the purchase I of a number of brood mares for an Australian client. These mares are to be mated in New Zealand before shipment to Australia. They include Mislaid, by All Alone from Inlaid, the half-sister to the dual Sydney Cuo winner Mosaic She is due to foal shortly to Phaleron Bay Miladi, by Weathervane from Frenzied. Finance, by Paper Money, is also due next month to St. Boswells The other three mares selected are maidens, and comprise that good performer Wine Card, by Paper Money out of Malmsey: Solo, an attractive young mare by Songbird, a sister, to the dual /Telegraph Handicap winner Meadow Lark; while the fifth mare, Shining Hours, another winner, is by Arausio from Sunny Hours, and is, therefore, a half-sister to that smart two-year-old Konneta and to Karl and Sergia. This family produced many high-class winners for the late W. G. Stead. Gay Ballerina, La Moderhe, Cimabue, Gay Son, Client, Frieslartd, Los Gatos are a few of the.notable performers from this particular family. Battlesong The Irish St. Leger winner Battlesong, by Carbine's, grandson ' Spion Kop, has arrived safely at Mr G- A. Kain's. Gladstone Park Stud at Orari, and is settling down well in his new, home. This .is one of the best-bred and best-performed horses imported into the Dominion,' for not only is he by the Derby winner Spion Kop, who sired another Derby winner in Felstead who in turn sired the great filly Rockfel, which won the One Thousand Guineas and Oaks, but Battlesong is out of a very famous mare in Cradle Song, a daughter of Hurry On. No fewer than eight of her progeny are already winners, and two of these have won classic races. Battlesong, who is very closely related to the highly-successful sire of stayers in Australia, The Buzzard, is to be given a light season with selected mares,, a number of which have been sent down from the North Island. Battlesong. who descends from the most famous mare in the English Stud Book, Uluminata, is a horse of the most approved English type, having any amount of size, ample, bone of the highest quality, a perfect set of.legs, joints, and feet, and splendid straight action : He is marked very similarly to Carbine himself, and should be destined to sire horses of the very highest quality here. If his stock take after himself, as would be expected, ' they should show ideal conformation and great quality. .New Zealand is lucky that a horse of Battlesong s qualifications should reach these shores, for he was, already sold for export to Europe, and ft was only after the outbreak of war that Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd.. were able to secure him for Mr Kain. In addition to running away with the Irish St. Leger, he was narrowly beaten in both the Two Thousand Guineas and Derby, and in England proved himself a high-class stayer in handicap races. Man's Pal Some of the best authorities in England have expressed the opinion that a very big sire and big mare never got or produced a champion. Against that it has been pointed out that Hurry On was a very big horse, but he may be- cl?.ssed as an exception and not the general rule. The best type of stallion is the big-little horse not going beyond 16 hands or very little more. There is no doubt that Martian established himself as one of the most successful sires in the world. He got both great speed and great stayers. Martian was a pocket Hercules when in training but the majority of his stock had plenty of size. Several very big horses that won outstanding distinction on the turf never left anything as good as themselves, and this no doubt led to the opinions ' expressed by English authorities. Man's Pal is one of the Martian type of stallion... He has plenty of size and probably stands higher under the standard than when measured by the eye. Horses well balanced in conformation generally look smaller than their actual measurement, and that stands as an asset in their favour. In addition to a shapely conformation, Man's Pal has racing merit to support an attractive pedigree; "an ■ interesting feature of which consists in the fact that he is inbred to the Sunshine taproot probably the very best of the No. 1 family Martian Positano (the sire of four Melbourne Cup winners and the dams of two more) and Llmond are notable examples of the success of stallions, with a Sunshine taproot. Man's Pal was got by Manna, a Derby winner got by Phalaris from Pamela, a daughter of Lemberg, a Derby winner got by Cyllene. the sire of four Derby winners Manas'. Pal has a grand-dam got by Eager, the - sire of Gloaming's dam. Man's Pal's first crop of foals are now two-year-olds and showing such distinct promise on the training track that they are sure to greatly enhance his reputation as a sire. . Indications of Form It is a fairly common custom in Australia and this country to place noughts or numbers in front of a horse's name in order to indicate the placings in the last few starts. It. may be most misleading, because a row of noughts may represent better racing merit than a row of wins. If it was done in connection with the Churchill Handicap, Capricious would have a string of noughts and a couple of 2's in her last six starts, and not one win in 17 starts. Yet the handicapper makes her losing form contain more merit than the winning form of the majority of the field. In other words, the majority of the field could not equal what Capricious achieved in her best but unsuccessful performances.. It goes to show how misleading the noughts or numbers may ne as an indication of form The figures convey no indication of the class or merit of the placings, and a nought, which might mean a fourth in the Mew Zealand Cup. would rank as a minor performance than a win in the Kurow Cup contested by one of the weakest fields that ever went to the post for a mile ana: a-quarter race It is frequently said by some of those connected with racing that such and such a horse is badly handicapped because he has to give weight to another that has won three or four more races than the one asked to give awav weight. The merit of the form is the primary factor to be considered by the weight adjuster but this very important point does not seem to strike some of the critics As a matter of fact, it Would be safe to say that ery few indeed fair the trouble to wade through the form of every horse in the field before expressing an opinion about a handicap It reminds one of the old days when the weight? were called at a racing club's office to those interested A wiseacre was present on one occasion, and he knew more about a handicap than the men that compile 'hem As each horse's handicap was called the wiseacre interjected, "No chance"; and it was still "no chance" at the decoration of the last weight in the field. When a probable winner cannot bf found in a field it seems to be a rather good nandicap In the Churchill Handicap, Capricious, a non-win-ner, has to give weight to others who have won from two to seven races, and noughts or numbers might suggest that the 100-weight is at'the wrong end of the handicap. He is by the Australian champion Lawn Derby (lmin 59 3-ssec), and, according to northern reports, shows a good deal of promise in his work to date. Possibilities Owing to the Wanganui racecourse being required for military purposes, the Wanganui Trotting Club is endeavouring to finalise arrangements to hold its next meeting at Hutt Park. No concrete proins- has yet been offered the Wellington Trotting Club, but it is understood that one day of the two-day date may be inwith the Wellington Club's permit for November. Objection Th' Auckland Trotting Club has lodged an objection to the Waikato Hunt races being held at Te Rapa on October 28, instead of at Cambridge. The second day of the Auckland Trotting Club's spring meeting is held the same day, and it is considered that the change of venue is bringing the hunt meeting too close to Epsom. SOUTHLAND RACING CLUB DATE OF SPRING MEETING (Special to Daily Times) INVERCARGILL, Oct. 4. The Southland Racing Club has decided to apply for November 25, the King's Birthday, as the date of its spring meeting. About two weeks ago the club entered a protest against the granting of November 23 as one of the dates of the Forbury Park Club's meeting, as it clashed with the date allocated for the Southland spring meeting. No reply had been received up to to-night from the New Zealand Trotting Conference and in view of the short time now available to make arrangements for the meeting the committee of the Southland Racing Club, which met to-night, decided to make application to the New Zealand Racing Conference for November 25 in lieu of November 23. It was pointed out by members of the committee that the programme of the spring meeting could not be held up any longer. BETTING SYSTEMS At the Methven and Thames meetings to-day the win and place system of betting will be operated. RICCARTON NOTES NOVICE JUMPER (Special ro Daily limes) CHRISTCHURCH, Oct. 4. The tracks at Riccarton have dried up well and there should be some good work to-morrow by candidates for the Dunedin meeting. , , Mungatoon, who has had a long spell, has come back quite sound and in robust health. F. A. Roberts intends to try him over hurdles. He has had some preliminary education in his trainer s paddock, and E. Baker rode him over the pony' hurdles this morning. The Night Raid mare Racewell had a fair amount of racing last season and shaped like developing stamina Trouble in one of her knees prevented her from racing at the Grand National meeting, but she has made a good recovery. E'. C Parker has her looking well and she will start the season at the South Canterbury meeting, where she will have the three-year-old Blue Abbey as a mate. H- Nurse has had St. Cloud in easy work for some time, and the mare will soon be started on sprinting tasks, bne Improved steadily all through last season and her win at the recent Grand National meeting was evidence that she will have to be reckoned with in tire best sprint company from now on. Trench Fight is training on well and he went verv attractively in a half-mile sprint this week. Provided he remains sound lie will win good races again tins season. C. C. McCarthy intends to race him at South Canterbury and Motukarara before taking on Riccarton. Happy Night, after being in retirement for a long time, has been in work for a few months. So far his tasks have been of a steady type, but he has come on nicely and he is building up into good shape He is now in J. McLean's team and he should do his share of winning lor the stable this season. F. D. Jones has made arrangements to race Royal Chief at Trentham this montn It' is possible that he will be accompanied by King's Toast, who has been showing attractive form in his recent work. When Guilder pulled up lame a lew weeks ago. it looked as if her case might be serious. It turned out to be only a minor mishap, however, from which she has made a good recovery, and she is again in work, looking in excellent health. She has been allowed to drop out of the New Zealand Cup, but her speed will enable her to win plenty of shorter races, provided she trains on. She is booked for her next race at Motukarara. Although The Wrecker has been on the easy list for a few weeks, a let up he had earned, he is a daily visilor to the tracks again. In the meantime, he is being kept to light tasks, but there is plenty of time to have him forward enough to race at Riccarton next month. Fracas, a sister to Trench Fight, by Winning Hit from Scrimmage, lias foaled a colt to Broicl'ort, at the Stonyhurst Stud She was a good two-vcar-old. and alter spelling most of the following season she returned to show good form at four years. She has proved a shy breeder, as she is now ten years old. and this is her first foal.
