RESUMPTION OF SCHEME 4B STATEMENT BY MINISTER (From Our Parliamentary Reporter> WKLLINGTON, Oct. 4. "Instructions have been issued for full resumption of scheme 48, except in so far as it concerned the allocation of men considered likely to be placed on farm operational work in the near future," said the Minister of Labour, Mr P. C. Webb, in a reply given in the House to-day to an urgent question asked by Mr C W Boswell (Govt., Bay of Islands) Mr Boswell asked if the resumption of the scheme was intended, as it had been of considerable benefit to the farmers generally. Mr Webb said that partial resumption of the scheme had been ordered last month, and 2885 men were now employed. The results obtained under the plan since April 1, 1940. showed how increased production had been helped. The stock increase was estimated as follows:—Sheep 52.959; cows. 6241; cattle 5170; pigs. 80 The work completed comprised scrub cutting. 54,566 acres- gorse grubbing, 14,980 acres: drains dug or deepened. 35.474 chains; fencing. 10,124 chains; bushfelling stumping, 5174 acres. In additionthe great majority of the men had derived physical benefit, and had become efficient and willing workers.
