QUEEN CARNIVAL

GENEROUS DONATIONS CITIZENS AND FIRMS FIRST LIST ANNOUNCED Besides organising entertainments and the other more spectacular methods of raising funds for the Otago Patriotic Queen Carnival, the executive is seeking direct contributions from citizens and firms throughout Otago. These donations have been sought only in the last week, but already a sum of no less than £4086 5s has been given. Arrangements, have been made with che contributors that the sums which they have given will be credited to the different queens according to the expressed wishes of the donors. The preliminary list of contributions announced yesterday is as fellows:— £ s. d.

ARMY QUEEN ACTIVITIES Yesterday, Queen Airini and Princess Betty, the Public Service Princess, were introduced to the staff at the Hillside Workshops by the works manager. MiTribes. They were accorded an enthusiastic reception by the hundreds of workers, who gave up part of their lunch hour in order to meet the Queen and the Princess. Mr Arthur Macdonald outlined the arrangements for the coming. Olde English Fayre.. and solicited the support and co-operation of the workshop staff. Queen Airini gave a short speech and was loudly and enthusiastically acclaimed by the men. A note of original humour was introduced when one enthusiast was challenged by his fellow-workers to step up and kiss the Queen. The challenges were supported by halfcr.own bets, and, needless to say. they were quickly accepted. Amidst roars of applause the half-crpwns were collected by the gentleman concerned,' who then gave his winnings to the Pub-' lie Service Princess funds. To-night the Ravensbourne Football Club will hold a dance in aid of Army Queen funds in the Ravensbourn* Hall. An energetic committee has worked exceptionally hard during the last few davs to ensure the success of the function, and it is anticipated that the funds will benefit considerably from the effort. A meeting of all members of the Army Queen's Women's Committee will be held in Room 1. Third Floor, of the A.M.P. Building, Princes street, on Monday, at 4 p.m.. to discuss arrangements for "Ye Olde English Fayre." It will be "Army Night" at the Main Town Hall and the Concert Chamber to-night, for the weekly dance in support of Queen Aifini's campaign is expected to attract several hundred territorials: from local camps. For those who like modern 'dancing only. Mat de Laney's Radio Rhythmics will play modern dance music in the Main Town Hall, where Miss Daphne Jordan, Mr J. MacFarlane, and Mr Arthur Waller will be the soloists,'and in the Concert Chamber Wright's Orchestra will supply the music for those who wish to take part in popular old-time dances. Spectators will: be admitted to both halls at a small charge, and there will be plenty of interest for them. AIR FORCE CANDIDATE A large and appreciative audience' at Balclutha on Thursday night listened to a programme arranged by Mr Ernest Drake. The Air Force Queen (Miss Mary Pratt), accompanied by three Maids-of-Honour. was escorted to the stage by Mr Miller, chairman of the Balclutha Patriotic Committee, and there presented to Mrs J. Copland, acting Mayoress, and Mrs Miller. Once again the feature of the programme was Miss Pratt's singing. A silk pennant auctioned by Mr W. Twaddle, of Dunedin, realised the sum of £B7 10s,This pennant was afterwards"- presented to the Queen.; Including-thfi!,. door takings, the amount collected at' the concert was £l3O. The official party and artists were afterwards entertained by the Balclutha Committee. Mr R. R. Grigor. chairman of the South Otago Zone Committee expressed pleasure at the visit that the Queen and her party had given to his committee and to South Otago. He felt that it had done a great deal to awaken interest in the appeal, A most enjoyable concert in aid of the Air Force Queen was held in the Highcliff Haii on Wednesday evening. The Countess of the Peninsula, Miss Lexie Mathieson. was piped on to the stage by Piper McVean and was welcomed by the chairman. Mr G. Farquhar. Miss Mathieson, after replying.gave two humorous recitations. Other items were contributed by such well' known Dunedin performers as Mr Wil-son-Brown, Miss Gwenda Burt, Mr Arthur Robertson. Miss P. Atkinson's partv of Highland dancers, a pianof accordion duo, Mr Harry Oates. Mrs lan Ballantyne. Miss Errington, and Miss Clyde. The chairman thanked all who had helped to make the evening a success bv raising a few pounds for the Air Force Queen. Mr R. M. Farnuhar. assisted by Mr T. Moore's piano-accordion duo, played for a dance which concluded the evening. Gymnastics, relay races and athletics will also help to promote a successful day, while a march past by the various women's interhouse sports teams, headed by the

STRAND COMMUNITY SING The combined community sing in the Strand Theatre yesterday for the Air Force and Navy Queens was a gratifying success, the sum of £4O being collected,'although a Small -portion Of this amount was earmarked for soldiers' Christmas parcels. Both Miss Mary Pratt and Miss Jessie McLennan were present, and were introduced by the chairmen of their respective committees. Later they contributed items, Miss Pratt singing "When the Home Bells. Ring Again" and Miss McLennan giving a recitation, "Mrs Pinkerton's Bonnet." Both were given an enthusiastic reception by the large crowd. The leaders of the sing were Messrs H. P. Desmoulins and J. F. Himburg, with Mr A. Pettitt at the piano.
