Monday, September 30 (Before Mr H, W. Bundle, S.M.) Breach of Gaming Act Consequent on a raid carried out by Detectives Russell and Marshall on Saturday morning at a house in Ferguson street. Musselburgh, Henry Edward Scott, aged 54. appeared on a charge of having used his premises as a coming gaming house.—The defendant, who was represented by Mr G. B. P. Wilson, pleaded guilty.—Chief Detective Holmes explained that when the detectives visited the house about a quarter to 11, they found that 50 bets of a total value of £lO had been taken during the morning. “ I understand that the defendant has been betting for a number of years,” Mr Holmes said. “He was previously convicted in 1933 on a charge of keeping a common gaming-house, so that he knew the risk he was running. Apparently, however, he was prepared to take it.” —Mr Wi'scn submitted that the defendant was not in a big wav of business. as was disclosed by the fact that the bets on the list found by the police were all small ones. His client had been in steady employment until 1935, ns a signwriter. but failing eyesight compelled him to give up regular work and do only odd jobs.—A fine of £CO and costs (10s) was imposed. Maintenance On the application of his wife, a maintenance order was granted against .John Thomas Rea, maintenance being fixed at £2 per week. Edward Allan Richardson (Mi R. Frapwell) was proceeded against by his former wife (Mr B. S. Irwin) on a complaint for maintenance in respect of his son.—After hearing evidence, his Worship made an order for 10s per week, past maintenance being fixed at £7. Allan George Ma'rshall was proceeded against on a complaint for affiliation and maintenance orders in respect of an illegitimate child.—After evidence had been taken, the defendant was adjudged the father of the child, maintenance being fixed at 12s Gd per week, past maintenance amounting up to £8 15s, to be paid at the rate of 2s 6d weekly. The defendant was also ordered to pay confinement expenses totalling £5 Is 2d.
