PROBLEM No. 866 By H. T. Smith. Black 7, Kings 17, 31

White 19, Kings 8, 23. White to play and win. 1940 DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS SUBSCRIPTION LISTS ISSUED We have received an intimation from Mr W. O’Malley to the effect that the 1940 Dominion Championship Tourney is to commence on Boxing Day in the Sydenham Public Library. Christchurch, In accordance with previous arrangements. No material change is to be made from the methods adopted in preceding tourneys, the all-round system of play being once again in operation, while the sealed handicap customarily staged in conjunction with the main event has been retained as a magnet to the weaker players. No art union tickets are being issued, and the Tournament Committee Is entirely dependent on the financial assistance of adherents of the game. Subscription lists have been forwarded to a majority of the leading players, and these are required to be in the hands of Mr O’Malley by November 12, so that a prompt response to this appeal is essential. It behoves all well-wishers of the game to accept this opportunity of rendering practical aid, and whether the donation is a widow’s mite or of centennial proportions it will be appreciated. The Draughts Editor is happy to solicit subscriptions in the interests of the game, and all bequests will be acknowledged per medium of this column.

GAMES DOMINION CHAMPION’S PLAY

A correspondence game played between Messrs G. A. Brown, champion of New Zealand, and J. V. Earle, champion of South Australia, It is culled from the Melbourne Weekly Times. GAME No. 816.—” Denny,” 22 18.

(a) A fine line for White. (b) The best reply, if not the only answer. _ „ (c) More usual is 3 7, 22 15, 7 10 (d), 23 19, 27, same as game. Frankly, 2 7 early seems best. (d) 7 11 loses, after which there are apparently two routes to the win. In the Australian championship final H. Egan won from E. W. Smith by 7 11, 31 26 (e). 11 IS, 23 19, 26 22, 27, 22 15. 710 (7 11, 30 26), 23 19, etc. White wins. (e) In the ninth American tourney W. F. Ryan scored a brilliant win from K. Grover via the old book : 30 26, 11 18, 26 22, 27, 22 15, 14 17, 21 14, 6 10. 15 6, 1 17, etc. At this stage it was thought to draw. The game is copyright in the ninth tourney book. _ ~ (f) 26 23 also draws, but 28 24, 7 11, 26 22. 11 18. 22 15. 14 18, 30 26, 5 9, 26 22, 18 23, etc.: 10 ,14 is a good Black win bv L. M. Lewis. 25 22 looks critical for White (g) Seems logical, particularly as 7 11 is well answered with 22 18, etc., and the 18 14 threat. , (h) One would at first hardly imagine White was going to draw. (i) Yet evidently Black has no greater (j) Not even forced, as 32 28, 9 14, 16 11, 7 23, 22 18, 10 19, 18 2 draws. A "BRISTOL CROSS” STUDY A studv of the " Bristal Cross ” opening contributed to the Vancouver Sun by W. J. Tregidga. GAME No. 917.—" Bristol Cross.”
