PERSONAL AND SOCIAL

The fortnightly meeting of the “ Hard of Hearing League ” was held in the Vocation Schoolroom Moray place, on Tuesday evening. An interesting, graphic and often amusing talk was given by Mr Kennedy on “ The Lakes and Waterfalls of New Zealand.” which thanks to the recently-installed electrical hearing aids, was clearly heard by the members. After supper, a short community sin? was enjoyed, led by the principal. Miss Doris McLean, and accompanied by the secretary, Mr Harris. Dr Carswell the president, cordially thanked Mr Kennedy on behalf of the members.

Fifty-five years of married life is a distinction that falls to the lot of few couples, and the many relatives and friends of Mr and Mrs George Wix will be glad to know that to-night they will have attained this rare and happy occasion. Both Mr and Mrs Wix are both hale and hearty and although they have lived an active and strenuous life they are still in full possession of all their faculties They are well known in the south end of Dunedin, where they have spent practically all their married life They have been long and actively associated with the work of the South Dunedin Baptist Church, having been connected with this cause since its com menccmenl on the Flat Hearty con gratulations and best wishes will be extended to them, together with the hope that they may be spared to one another for a long time vet.

Mr L. E. Brown’s party presented a concert on Wednesday evening at the Montecillo Red Cross Home. The big recreation room, with its blazing fire, oresented a cheerful appearance Mrs Walmsley. who acted as accompanist. brought with her a larger number of performers, who contributed tc one of the best concerts yet heard at the home The items were as follows: —Mrs Barnett. Mrs Harman Misses Crooke, Elsie Kirkham. Frances Holmes. Lorna Pile. Dorothy Barron Jean McLay. E. Wood, and Gwenda Burt: Messrs E. Fish and A. Simpson: duets. Messrs W. Finnic and McKinlay. Misses Phyllis Crooke and Elsie Kirkham; vocal quartet—Mrs Barnett. Mrs Harman. Messrs McKinlay and Finnie; dance. Miss Rita Cook (“Air Force Tap”); elocutionary numbers. Miss Kirkham. On behalf of the matron, staff and patients. Mr Tom Lewis thanked the party for their excellent entertainment, and Mrs Brown for the supper which she had supplied.

Service Group Meets The Crawford Lounge, gay with spring flowers, was the scene of an enjoyable function on Tuesday evening, when the Austral-Girton members acted as hostesses at the. meeting of the Combined Ex-girls’ Service Group. Miss Frances Ross, president of the Austral-Girton Association, welcomed the 102 members present, and extended a special welcome to visitors. The president of the Service Group, Mrs C. R. Martin, also welcomed the members, and mentioned the fact that the Service Group would be in charge of the “dug-out” on September 28. The entertainment opened with all sorts of novel games, four players being at each table. The games created much amusement, and the winner was Miss Alice Gregg. An amusing play-reading entitled “Waiting for the Bus,” was given by Austral-Girton, the players being Mesdames Cowie, Secular. Moss, Cameron, Horne. McCracken, and Misses Snowball, Gray, and Park (3) On view during the evening were the gifts brought by members for the Makogai Leper Mission Station This year a wonderful . collection of gifts was brought, including soft toys made by members, which were much admired. Mrs Buttle (St Hilda’s), on behalf of those present, proposed a vote of thanks to the hostesses.
