K. W.. Mosgiel.—'The 5 per cent increase, which dates from August 12, 1940, applies to persons working under awards or industrial agreements. but not to market gardeners, whose wages are governed by an extension 0 f the Agricultural Workers Act. “Pen.” Otago—lf a person receiving an age or invalid benefit goes to a private hospital the benefit is not affected: but, if he enters a public hospital, a reduction is made in the benefit provided he is in the institution for a full calendar month or longer. “Inquirer.” Chatto Creek. —There are two distinct funds in connection with the Red Cross activities. There was. first, the joint appeal issued in the name of the St. John Ambulance and the Red Cross Society. This appeal was to provide comforts for the sick and wounded on active service and overseas. The appeal for this fund is now completed and it is closed. There is also, the ordinary peace-time work carried out in New Zealand by the Red Cross Society. This work, which is being continued, is quite outside the scope of patriotic work. Therefore, if anyone desires to contribute to the peacetime work of the Red Cross Society in New Zealand he may do so. As stated, however, the fund for providing comforts for men overseas is closed, and it is now a contravention of the Patriotic Funds Regulations to raise money for this purpose.
