CLOTHES FOR AN EMPRESS

The “gamut of emotions” which actresses have long since worn thin has been the route Miss Davis has followed to stardom. The rank of impress seems to be a fitting climax lor her interesting career, for it is as the Empress Carlotta, consort of Maximilian, ill-fated emperor of the shortlived Mexicap monarchy, that she appears in “Juarez.” Few players have ever found themselves dressed in a more magnificent wardrobe than that designed by OrryKelly for Bette in this film. Each costume was authentically copied from those worn by Empress Carlotta herself. Her naturally blonde hair hidden under a black wig, her’ skin tones darkened to match, Bette looks every inch an empress in her scenes with Brian Aherne, who plays Maximilian in the picture.

A tragic and a lovely empress is the latest Academy Award winner in “Juarez.” She is required to change from an ideally happy bride, fulfilling the royal destiny to which she was born, to a woman for whom life holds no ray of happiness. Bette has suffered before, in other pictures. Very recently she went blind in “ Dark Victory.” In several pictures she has died.
