THE QUEEN CARNIVAL

ro THE EDITOR Sir, —It would seem that the effort to raise funds for the rehabilitation of Otago soldiers is rather a “ flop,” s Is not surprising. First, the whole thing is badly organised; and. secondly, for the present the object is wrong. Afte, we have Won the war it is the State's job to rehabilitate the soldiers. The parade on Friday was a definite flhp, as all parados of that kind are in Dunedin. The organisers of these affairs should go to Auckland and learn how to handle a parade of this kind. To raise the enthusiasm of the crovyd it is necessary to have colour and display and noise, plenty of noise. What was to prevent the use 'of flags and banners and all the bands playing at once stirring music, even though every one played a different tune? And why shut .he Mayor up in a little car so that the public could not see him? The queens, also—these ladies should have been in Tominent view on a colourful float. The Casino, also, is not what one could call a particularly pleasant place; it is drab, cheap, and very uninteresting, and the games display a sad lack of imagination on the part of the organisers. Now. if this carnival effort had been to raise £IOO.OOO to purchase areoplanes for the use of the British Government I am quite sure the money would roll in, because when the cause is a worthy ne Dunedin people respond wholeheartedly and it would appear that aeroplanes ar. going to be the deciding factor in this war Is it too late to change the object of ’he fund? lam glad to see tha< the council has refused permission for a Sunday night concert. If it is impossible to raise the necessary amount of money on six days of the week the object is certainly unworthy I hope the council will maintain this -tand for the duration. —I am, etc., Harlequin. Dunedin, September 11.
