MODERN BRITISH ART
TO THE EDITOR Sir.—Having read the letter signed " Grateful" published by you a few days ago, permit me to state that I am in complete disagreement with his views. I made a special trip to our far distant Art Gallery to view these pictures, and consider that it was time and money wasted. Most of the pictures are, in my opinion, not worth looking at, and many, of them are done in what is, generally termed the " modernistic style." A picture should be pleasing and interesting to look at, but many of 'hose on view are grotesque splashes of vivid paint, and although J think I am possessed -*of average intelligence, I was at a complete loss to .understand what they were supposed to represent. It was a great relief to leave this special collection and wander through the other rooms, admiring and enjoying the permanent collection. Is it possible that the painters of these modernistic atrocities have not the ability to follow in the steps of our great artists, and so have broken out in a new style which they acclaim is far superior to anything at present in existence?—l am, etc., Flake White. Dunedin, July 10.
