Oamaru branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held on Monday afternoon, Mrs Parker (president) being in the chair. Mrs James, speakmp from Daniel, said that it was all-im portant to have direction from God It was decided that a letter of sympathy be sent to Miss Smyth, who is in hospital, and that a plain afternoon tea be served during the war. The monthly meeting of. the Waikouaiti branch was held on Friday last, Mrs J. A. Townsend presiding. Mrs W. Wedge, of Palmerston, gave an instructive talk on the " Fifth Column " activities in different countries and described the methods used. The hostesses were Mesdames J. Hallum, -A. Cameron, and Miss H. Hallum. * * * Miss Butt presided at the monthly meeting of the Ngapara branch. Miss Robins, A.C.E. tutor, gave a demonstration on the making of lettuce salads. The competitions resulted: Bloom—Miss McCulloch 1, Mrs Butt 2, Mrs McPherson 3; ginger snaps—Mrs Brain 1/Mrs A. Eckhold and .Miss N. Watson (equal) 2; fancywork—Miss Butt 1, Mrs A. Eckhold 2; thrift articleMrs A. Eckhold 1, Mrs Brain 2, Miss N. Watson 3. The hostesses were Misses B. Watson and E. Morrison.. * * * The meeting of the Airedale-Rose-bery branch was presided over by Mrs Poison. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs and Miss Buick in their recent bereavement. Miss J Rirkpatrick presented Mrs Poison with a spray on behalf of the Birthday Club, Mrs Poison being the birthday member for the month. ' Mrs Campbell presided at the meeting bf the Bannbckburn branch on Tuesday evening, and extended a welcome to Mesdames Radford, Fergusson, J. F. Smith, T.. Smith, and Miss Smith, of the Cromwell branch. Mesdames Campbell and Lawrence epOrted on the provincial conference. The hostesses were Mrs Leslie and Henderson. * * * Mrs Sinclair presided at the monthly meeting of the Taieri Mouth branch, held at Mrs Foster's residence. The roll call was " A treatment for a burn." A competition—Plat" of brown or wholemeal scones—resulted: —Mrs Palmer 1, Mr s Borthwick 2. Following afternoon tea—served bv Mrs Foster—the afternoon was given to. Red Cross discussions. * * * The Ngapara branch held its meeting on Tuesday evening, when Miss Butt presided, and Miss Robins gave an interesting demonstration on making lettuce salads. Thompson presided and a motion of sympathy was passed with Mrs Rankin and family in their recent bereavement. Miss Hamilton gave a report on the annual conference. Appeals were made far old linen for the local hospital, worn clothing for Lady Galway's Guild, and monetary donations to the Comforts Club in Dunedin. It was agreed to help these causes, as far as possible members giving at least Is each towards the Comforts Club. The roll call was "A parcel worth 6d." The parcels will be sold later for Red Cross funds. The sum of £3, the proceeds of a cake and produce sale, was voted to the local branch of the Red Cross The competitions resulted:—Ginger gems—Mrs P. Hansen 1, Miss E. Cook Mrs Lory was hostess. ¥ # nThe monthly meeting of the Clutha branch was held on Friday last, Mrs A. J. Bell presiding. Mrs Holgate reported on the social aspect of the conference. It was decided to send a crate of eggs to the Services Welcome Club and that two members go from the branch each month to the intercessory service. A " bring and buy " sale resulted in the sum of £4 12s being raised to provide parcels for the soldiers. The hostesses were Mrs Barclay and Mrs Honi Anderson.
