In the children's nursery rhyme parade the prizes were awarded to Molly Craig ("Old Mother Hubbard with Her Dog"), Adam Begg ("Cock Robin"), and Graham Ramsay ("Wee Willie Winkie"). "Lucky Spot" waltz competitions were'won by Mr C. Thomson and partner, Mr E. Green and partner, and Misses Blair McCredie and Molly Craig (children's). Mrs. Taylor (president), after welcoming the visitors, asked Mrs A. Soper to light the candles on the cake.and Mrs B. Goodman to blow them out The cake, which was later raffled, was won by Mr E. Green. Red Cross funds will benefit to the extent of £4 14s by the evening's effort. * * * The Windsor Park Institute celebrated its ninth birthday with a social afternoon. Mrs W. Taylor cut the birthday cake, and afterwards Mesdames Webster and'Watson gave an interesting play reading. The com-, petitions resulted: Meringues Mrs Adams 1, Mrs Mulligan 2, Miss F. To celebrate the institute's second birthday a large cake which had been made by a member was cut up and sold, the proceeds being for the soldiers' parcels. Songs were sung by Mrs Nicolson, and a sketch entitled "That Birthday Cake" was presented by Mesdames Ashton, King, Fawcett, and Smith. Mrs Cameron won a competition, "Trees." The hostesses were Mesdames Skene, Thorley, Ashton, and Fawcett. "' , * * ■*•'. The Sutton Institute held its seventh birthday party on Saturday last, when Mrs Kidd presided. Greetings were

conveyed by Mrs Polasheck (Middlemarch Institute) and Mrs B. Thompson (W.D.F.U.). The roll call was "What can we do to help in this time of war?" Members brought gifts for the Lady Galway Guild, and four parcels were sent forward for the soldiers. Mrs Kidd's motto was "Love and service." The iink letter from Sutton (Sussex) described many phases of war work and conditions in the villages and rural districts of England. The prizes for the year were awarded to Mrs Pedofsky Miss Terry, and Mrs A. T. Thompson. A "bring and buy" sale was held. A competition, "Madeka cake," resulted: Miss Terry 1 and 2, Mrs Pedofsky 3. As it was a Scottish night the motto was, "Oh would some power the giftie gie us tae see o'selves as ithers see us,"' and the roll call "A Scottish poem." The Golden Thread talk, "Tales of Pioneers," was continued by Mrs T. Dickson. Members brought garments for a parcel in response to the Lady Galway refugee appeal. Mrs Smith, who read a report of the Mid-Otago Federation conference, was elected delegate to the halfyearly council meeting at Naseby. A demonstration on the making of felt purses was given by Mrs Smith, and Mesdames T. King and Drain presented a humorous sketch. The competitions resulted:—Girdle scenes—Mrs Mathias 1, Mrs Fox 2, Mrs T. King 3; oat cakes—Mrs Mathias 1, Mrs Mathieson 2. Mrs T. King 3. An entertaining play was staged, those taking part being Mesdames Saunders, Mathias, Dickson, Riach and McDonald. The hostesses were Mesdames Mathieson, King. Mathias and McDonald. * * * . The Owaka Institute held its monthly meeting on Tuesday. Miss Winnebeck taking the chair. The motto was "Footprints on the sand of time are not made by sitting down," and the roll call "Household hints." The competitions resulted:—Hot water bag—Mrs Seymour 1, Miss Winnebeck 2 and 3; bloom—Mesdames Holland 1, Keelty 2, Miss Winnebeck 3. ' Mrs Cornell reported on the annual meeting at Balclutha. The hostesses were Mesdames Fraser, Calder, Crouch, Bell and Connell.

Mrs R. W. Newson presided over the monthly meeting of the Balclutha: Institute on Tuesday afternoon, Motions of'sympathy were passed with" Mesdames R. Lattimer and W. Berryman in their, recent bereavements. . The motto was "It is wiser to put- up a fence at the top of the precipice than to maintain an ambulance at the bottom." Mention was made of the illnesses of Mrs J. Low and Mrs James Gold (who met with an accident) and best wishes were extended for their speedy recovery. The roll'call was "A first aid hint." Mr E. V. Hughes, district officer of the St. John Ambulance Association, gave an interesting talk, and afterwards a short community sing was held. The competitions resulted:—Bloom—Mrs P. Mason 1. Mrs J. T. Two letters were if ''from Motcombe—the link institute in England. Earlier in the week several members visited the Broad Bay Institute, and were accorded a warm welcome. Beattie gave an iteresting demonstration on how to make a brooder for chicks, and the Drama Circle presented a play entitled " The Old Chest." The competitions resulted:—Baking— Mrs Carruthers 1, Mrs Polaschek 2, Mrs White 3; bloom—Miss Harris 1, Mrs A. Robertson 2, Mrs Carruthers 3; Italian quilting—Miss Arnott 1, Mrs White 2. The hostesses were Mesdames Watson, White, Bremner, Buchan, and Gillespie. Mrs D. G. Borrie presided at the monthly meeting of the Papakaio Institute.
