There was a popular misconception in the towns that the farmer generally was a wealthy man, said Mr H. E. Blyde, Dominion vice-president of the Farmers’ Union at the New Plymouth winter show opening. Just because a farmer went into town dressed in his best suit and driving a fairly good car it was assumed that he was better off than the other members of the community. Mr Blyde quoted figu.es showing, however, that 44 per cent, of the dairy section received an income of £4 a week or less.
