Karu Is due to load this evening for Nelson and New Plymouth, via Timaru and Lyttelton. The Walnui is to load to-day for Wellington, Napier, and Gisborne. To each member of the draft a parcel was presented from the women of Oamaru, and the Mayor (Mr L. J. K. Familton) sent an individual letter to each man, wishing the recipient Godspeed and a safe return. Staff Ball.—The Oamaru branch of Woolworth’s (New Zealand), Ltd., held its first annual ball in the Scottish Hall on Monday night. All present enjoyed themselves and music was supplied by Reg. Keith and his orchestra. Representative Squash.—The Oamaru team was successful in winning by 8 matches to 2 against Timaru in a representative game on Saturday night. Kilgour Members of the Palmerston railway staff and representatives of other organisations bade farewell on Tuesday evening to Mr R. Kilgour. who proceeded to Ngaruawahia yesterday on active service with the Railways Corps. Mr S. Gray presided over a large gathering, and after the usual toasts had been honoured, called upon Mr J. Curran, station master, to present a wristlet watch to their departing fellow employee. Mr Curran, making the presentation, complimented Mr Kilgour upon his action in responding to the Empire’s call in a time of stress, and wished him a speedy and safe return. He also referred to Mrs Kilgour, whose sacrifices were equal to those of her husband, and deserved utmost commendation. The Mayor (Mr W. B. Galloway) also congratulated Mr Kilgour upon his enlistment, and presented him with a fountain pen on behalf of the Palmerston Patriotic Committee. Messrs J. Mcßae (R.S.A.), J. McGregor and Logie (lodges), Whittleston, Ruston, Sheedy, Dougherty, McFadgen. and Smolensk! (railways) also paid tribute to the sterling qualities of Mr Kilgour, and extended sincere wishes for his future return to Palmerston. Mr Kilgour suitably responded. During the evening items were rendered by Messrs Kirby, McFadgen, Rasmussen, and Mercer. Patriotic Committee The chairman (Mr W. B. Galloway) presided at a meeting of the Patriotic Society on Tuesday evening. The treasurer reported that to date the sum of £155 13s had been collected for the Otago Provincial Council. Mr J. Mcßae reported that the Blue Mountain Riding had been canvassed by Mr D. Ross and he, collected £54 18s 6d. Mr J. J. Haggie reported that authority for a raffle had been obtained, and that the books were available for distribution. The chairman advised that a community sing organised by the Boys’ Brigade would be held in the Town Hall on July 8, and that the Dunedin community sing leaders would conduct it.
