CRASH INTO SEA
BLACKBURN-BAFFIN BOMBER THREE AIRMEN UNINJURED SKILL DISPLAYED BY PILOT (Per United Press Association) WHANGAREI. June 25. A Blackburn-Baffin medium bomber from Whenuapai crashed into the sea off Onerahi this morning. Pilot-officer Mackenzie. Aircraftsmen A. A. Hodden and B. Heath escaped' without even coming in contact with the water. They were able to rescue all the movable gear, including the radio set, instruments, and clothing, and were taken to the shore in dinghies which quickly clustered round. It is understood that the accident was due to running out of petrol. In bringing the plane down Mackenzie made a skilful landing. Thewheels, which were the first to touch the water, did so gently, but the resistance provided by the water tipped the plane on to its nose. At full tide the lower part of the upper wing is just above the surface of the water. The machine is apparently resting on its wh ee is and nose, with its tail in the air. Owing to the state of the tide the extent of damage is not ascertainable.
