PORT CHALMERS BOROUGH

MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING The monthly meeting of the Port Chalmers Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor, Mr T. Scollay, occupying the chair. The Mayor stated that Mr D. Forsyth, headmaster of the Port Chalmers School, and an ex-member of the council, had recently been appointed president of the New Zealand Educational Institute. The gas manager, in his report for the month, stated that 21i tons of coal were carbonised, yielding 282,600 cubic feet of gas, an average of 13,240 cubic feet per ton. The Main Highways Board has advised that expenditure on maintenance, renewals, and improvements during the current financial year would be curtailed by approximately 50 per cent, on last year’s expenditure, necessitating a rigid control of the board’s available funds. The Standing Committee reported having given con-lderation to the question of maintenance expenditure on highways within the borough, and was of the opinion that the only necessary work during the current year would be a maintenance sealing coat on the highway from King Edward square to the docks, nd also maintenance of the metalled portion of this highway as far as the borough boundary. A recommendation was made that application should be made to the Main Highways Board for authority to carry out this work. It was reported that the work of constructing a new kerb and channel in WicklllTe terrace between Daly and Burns streets was proceeding satisfactorily. Authority had been given to construct a new mudtank at the foot of Daly street and to continue the new kerb and channel around the corner to connect with the water table In Daly street. The Standing Committee reported that on completion of the present channelling work in Wickliffe terrace it was proposed to proceed with the construction of a kerb and channel in Beach street, after which kerbing and channelling would oc constructed in Bellevue place, between Bernicia and Burns streets, to bo followed by similar, work In Harrington street on the west side between Burns and Laing streets. Consideration had been given to the matter of .he re-erection of the band rotunda. The committee was of opinion that the matter should stand over until after the war. It was decided to grant the sum of £lO 10s to the Red Cross Sick and Wounded Fund. There was some discussion on the question whether the money should be given to the Red Cross Fund or the Patriotic Fund, motions in favour of both being forward. It was contended by some speakers that too much In overhead expenses would have to be deducted from the total collected for the Red Cross Fund, and others contended tnat the Patriotic Fund was subject to similar deductions. The decision was reached on a show of hands. The estimates for the year were adopted and rates were struck for the same amount as last year.
