QUEENSTOWN Plunket Society The annual card evening in aid of the Plunket Society was held last Wednesday. Over 70 people attended and as a result the society. benefited by £l4. Patriotic Committee A meeting of the District Patriotic Committee was held in Arrowtown on Thursday; Mr D. H, Cockburn presiding. The treasurer reported that the sum of £228 5s had been raised towards the Y.M.C.A. and Salvation Army appeal. The Garston and Glenorchy Sub-committees wrote asking if any portion of the money subscribed under the auspices of the Otago Provincial Patriotic Council would be set aside for the Southland province, as the majority of the men who had enlisted belonged to the Southland /Regiment. This raised the question of boundaries and it was decided to get a ruling from the council. It was reported by the Garston Committee that £6O had been raised in that district for the National and Red Cross Funds. In reference to a circular received from the Otago Provincial Patriotic Council regarding conditions governing the issue of licences for raffles, it was recommended that no boy under 14 years of age or girl under 16 years should be permitted to sell tickets in any public place. The chairman furnished a report setting out the proper control of the Dominion patriotic effort as outlined by a conference of the National Patriotic Council and National Patriotic Fund Board. Complaint was made that, very little wool had been received in the district for knitting purposes, and the chairman explained that there was a great scarcity of wool. It was resolved to issue permits to any subcommittee to raise money for the Red Cross. The committee promised its full support to Lady Galway’s appeal when it was launched. It was decided to make an appeal for parcels for soldiers overseas or the equivalent of 9s in cash Centennial Memorial At a meeting of the Centennial Memorial Committee in Arrowtown, the secretary, Mr H. F. Griffin, reported that £B7 was in hand for the memorial, which carried the Government subsidy The committee considered it inopportune to go on with the memorial at present. It was therefore decided to postpone the construction for the duration of the war and to give the money to the Government free of interest for war purposes. Aerodrome Board A meeting of the Queenstown Aerodrome Board was held on Thursday. The Public Works Department notified that the aerodrome would be closed for the duration of the war, and that it would be given a certain amount of maintenance. The department agreed to give the present grazier rights over the land and to give a three-year lease of the aerodrome to the Wakatlpu Golf Club. Formal permission was given to change the name of the landing ground to “ Queenstown Aerodrome.” EASTERN DISTRICTS Basketball Tournament On Thursday, a successful evening basketball tournament was held at Palmerston, Twenty-two teams took part. Flag Swamp 1 carried off the- honours and were presented with trophies by Mrs J D Brown, the president of the subassociation. The following were the results:—Section I: Palmerston A, 6 points. Section II: Flag Swamp I, 6 points. Section HI; Flag Swamp, 6 points. Section IV: Railway I 2 beat Palmerston I 1 in the play off. Section V; In the play-off, Palmerston Staff 3 beat Flag Swamp II 1. Semi-finals: Flag Swamp 13, Palmerston A nil; Railway I 2, Flag Swamp I nil. Flag Swamp I 4. Palmerston Staff ml. Final: Flag Swamp I 5, Railway I nil. ALEXANDRA Patriotic Committee The Mayor (Mr W. Bringans) presided over a meeting'of the Alexandra Patriotic Committee on Friday nigbt method of raising funds locally for patxlotic work was fully discussed, and it was mentioned that over £2OOO had been collected in the last waf. It was decided to “ zone " the town and to request residents to make regular monthly contributions, the money to be collected once a month by collectors. Obituary The death of Mrs Mary Schaumann, aged 79 years, occurred on Friday. The deceased had been connected with the town for 77 years, having come from Australia with her parents in 1864. Her late husband was a Mayor of Alexandra, and during that period she carried out the duties of Mayoress with dignity. The deceased was a staunch supporter of trie Presbyterian Church and its various activities, Until she died Mrs Schaumann was actively interested in the different branches of the church. At St. Enoch’s Church on Sunday evening reference was made to her passing by the Rev. H. W West. The funeral took place on Sunday, (he service at. the church and graveside being conducted by Mr West. Mrs Schaumann is survived by three sons and two daughters
