J V- ip * A number of New Zealand nurses who were visiting England when war broke out have enlisted in Queen Alexandra’s Imperial Military Nursing Service Reserve,, says our London correspondent, writing on May 24. Miss F. M. Allan presided over an exceptionally large attendance of members of the Otago Girls’ High School Ex-girls’ Club, held in the Womens Club last night. The programme was in the charge of the married women, and the first item was an original poem by Mrs Dodd, entitled "Pioneer Women.” This was followed by an extremely interesting talk by Mrs Elliott, who spoke about Otago from the early days to the present time Mrs C. M. Barnett sang “Let Us Now Praise Famous Men,” accompanied on the piano by Mrs Walmsley. Miss Allan proposed a vote of thanks to the performers. * ¥ * The women members of the Australian Society held a social afternoon in the Strand‘Salon on Thursday last as the guests of Mr and Mrs Paape. The attendance was exceptionally good about 80 members spending an enjoyable afternoon playing cards, at which the lucky prize winners were Mesdamfes Robb (bridge). J. H. Kerr (trump whist), and W. Stewart (lucky tea cud). Mrs John' Hamer gave two delightful humorous items, and Mrs A. Orton passed a vote of thanks to Mr and Mrs Paape and all those who had helped to make the day a success. An appeal to those present resulted in the sum of £l2 being collected for the Red Cross Fund.' ;* * * At the monthly social afternoon in the Theosophical Hall there was a good attendance, and a happy .programme was presented by Miss Molly whose pupils contributed these items. —“God Defend New- Zealand, . by combined voices; play Elizabeth of England” and The Wishing Stone , solo recitations by Misses Aynl Millow and Lorna Patrick. Speaking on the work of “ Invisible Helpers, Miss A Inglis referred to the various f° rc ®? at work, including angels, advanced occultists, etc., who were able consciously to help our soldiers..and also the band of souls who assisted the “dead” soldiers, The speaker distributed copies of. a peace meditatmn, to be said every noon, -the cnair womln, Miss C. Dalziel. after thanking the performers, announced afternoon tea, with informal discussion. The room was tastefully decorated with laige bowls of chrysanthemums. & V * The annual meeting of the Queenstown branch of the P.W.M.U. was held on Thursday, when the Rev. D. ix. Boyd presided over an excellent attendance. The annual report showed that interest had been maintained throughout the year’s work and the members looked forward in faith to a fruitful year in spite of difficulties that might lie ahead.
