Patriotic Meeting Nominations are due to-morrow for the Southland Racing Club’s meeting to be held in aid of the Patriotic Funds. Added to the List Three members of F. Davis’s team at Matamata in Pern, Cheddington, and Worton were all added to the list last week. Cheddington is expected to develop into a very fine three-year-old. Patriotic Effort At the autumn meeting of the Wellington Racing Club the Jockeys’ Association decided to make an effort on behalf of the Patriotic Fund. Contributions were closed last month, and as a result the Patriotic Fund will benefit by some JJSO. In Reverse The following is from an international publication: “Horse racing has gone into reverse in Calistoga, California. The horses are trotted out to the track, where each jockey is obliged to give up his mount and ride someone else's. Then every rider tries to come in first, thus enhancing his own horse’s chance of being last. The last three horses win!” The Winning List The following is the list of. the leading horsemen this season prior to Saturday last: —W. J. Broughton 46, B. H. Morris 43, H. N. Wiggins 41, W. J. Mudford 37, P. Atkins 33, P. Spratt 32, G. R. Tattersail 30. W. F. Ellis 28, G, Cameron 28, R, W. McTavish 26. A. E. Ellis 26, A. Jenkins 25, L. J. Ellis 25, W. Jenkins 24, P. Burgess 23, L. Beau Vitc A Melbourne writer, commenting upon New Zealand horses that have raced in Australia, says: "I am convinced that Beau Vlte failed to reveal his best form in Australia, and since his return to the Dominion he has carried all before him. Beau Vite certainly appeared to have a great chance of winning the Melbourne Cup last year when he was among the leaders when the field settled down in the straight for the home run. He, however, tired slightly, and was beaten out of a place. Perhaps he may return to Australia for the spring racing next reason, and, if he retains his New Zealand form, he is going to be a great danger in any race that is selected for him.” English Fixtures The revised list' of fixtures authorised by the Jockey Club provides for racing in England for the months of June, July and August on a much more extensive scale than during the spring, and there will be only eight days without a meeting during those summer months. The four-day Ascot' meeting at Newmarket, and the most famous of the Ascot races, will be run, including the Gold Cup, Wokingham Stakes, Hunt Cup. and Ascot Stakes. A number of racecourses have been granted meetings for the first time since the outbreak of the present conflict, but among the important events which will not be run are the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park, the Gimcrack Stakes at York, and several Goodwood races. As some compensation to owners who had intended to run horses at the abandoned Ascot meeting in June, the King has approved of the Ascot authority providing the added money to certain races, as was done in 1915. In that year, the Ascot authority added £IOOO to the Newmarket Gold Cup. the substitute for the Ascot Gold Cup, and a similar amount to the Windsor Stakes and the New Coventry Stakes, all being run at Newmarket. The Kentucky Derby The win of Gailahadion in the Kentucky Derby would probably be a big surprise. He raced only five times as a two-year-old for one second placing worth 180 dollars, and he was not in the first 24 horses rated the best two-year-olds by the critics. Moreover, it is extremely probable that he was a maiden winner. Only three maidens have won in the history of the race. The Derby favourite Bimelech, bred owned by Colonel E. R. Bradley, won all his six races last year, including the Futurity Stakes, and earned 135,090 dollars. He was the winter favourite, and the cabled result discloses that he maintained this position to the post. His defeat into a minor place would create a sensation. The Kentucky Derby is a very valuable race, and it is interesting to read how the money is divided. Of the 75,000 dollars added money, the winner received 53,500 dollars, plus all the nomination and starting fees which, at a conservative estimate were rated at 13,000 dollars, a gross of 66,500 dollars to the winner. The second horse get's 8000 dollars, third 3000 dollars and fourth 1000 dollars. The sum of 6000 dollars is divided among the trainers of the first three horses, 3000 for the winner, 2000 for the second and 1000 for the third. Breeders get 3500 dollars, 2000 for the winner, 1000 for second and 500 for third. The owner of the winner also gets a 5000-dollar gold trophy, which is separate from the stake.
